I'd like to make an appointment with this T but the drive there is 1 hour and 20 minutes which would be worth it if he's good.

He called me this morning and I was asleep and missed his call. So I called back and left a voicemail. So I'm waiting on him to call me back.

I thought you already had an appointment with someone for the 26th.

I still have one scheduled for the 25th. But I want to visit both of them to get an idea of what therapy would be like with them.
Thanks for this!

An hour and a half drive for therapy seems really excessive since that would be at least once a week. You've talked a lot about struggling with finances, and that would be the additional transportation cost on top of therapy cost. While I can see perhaps going that distance for a medical specialist that I might only need to see once a month or so, to do that weekly would be a huge amount of time on the road, particularly since you have home obligations that would seem to require you to not be gone that far and that long so often.

Why not slow down a bit and see how the appointment goes on the 25th?
Thanks for this!

I think trying out at a time several is a good idea. For me, that distance would be too far for a mere therapist - but I did used to take a dog that far each week to participate in an activity the dog and I enjoyed (but I sort of sucked at - the dog was great) doing.

I'm used to driving that far because last season we used to drive there every week for football games.

I personally wouldn't want to drive that far to a therapy session and have to drive all the way home when I may have a lot in my mind and still be a bit upset from session content.
Thanks for this!

If my t moved & the journey took that long, I'd probably continue as I've been with him 4 years, but finding a new t, I'd definitely not opt for one that far away. I think Sparkle made a very important point in that, would you be in a fit & safe position after a not so positive session, to be able to drive home after? It's worth at least thinking about.

What is the reason that this particular therapist appeals to you? There must be some big draw for you i think to even consider a therapist who is that far away.
Thanks for this!

It was his profile. It sounds like what I'm looking for.

Hope,

I'm proud of you for looking into therapists. The drive does seem far and I would echo the concerns others have shared. Sometimes I'm amazed I found my home and my T is not nearly as far. Maybe if both worked out you could see the farthest only for support? Not all Ts work that way though so make sure to ask. Hang in there.

If you do see a t that far away, you might want to ground yourself after session before making that drive. I used to have a long train ride and walk to t's office. Sometimes I'd get
Halfway home and not realize how I did it.

Ps the benefit of a long commute is that you have time to mentally prepare yourself before and time to wind down afterwards. Good luck!!

What specifically did his profile say that interested you? In your other thread you were trying to figure out what qualities you wanted in a T, so I was interested to know what he said that helped you clarify what you were looking for?
Thanks for this!

Try him out and see if he's worth it to you. If your transportation is dependable, you have the finances, time and the emotional support figured out for after the sessions, I say go for it.

You might want to ask the T if he has hospital privileges....and consider if the hospital is too far away for you...just in case that is an issue.

A really good therapist is worth the drive. It can't hurt to schedule a consultation so you can check them out.
