Anyone else go on walks with their T? We started doing this back in September and do it every session now, its super helpful for me, because I am used to walking my dog every day so its my comfort zone and I find I am more chatty and open rather than just sitting there in the office.... its getting colder now though so the walks go a bit quicker but he still goes with me.
Thanks for this!

There is a therapist in my area that advertises that she walks with clients. Frankly I like walking way too much to want a therapist around to **** it up. And the two I hired are so old - I doubt they could walk very much or fast enough for me - and I hate having to slow down while walking.

I find it helpful to reduce anxiety and awkwardness by having a forward purpose. Here in this state it is usually too hot or too cold for a walk to be any fun. One of the only things I don’t like about his new building is that there isn’t a good area to walk

That stinks about no good walking area. My T's place I go to, we just walk the same block every time but when I go to his private office, we walk downtown, since its there, just wander around.

I get the cold thing, we are in that now, we actually went, the other evening and it was 19 degrees lol... we came in with red faces and his nose was running lol... he looked on his phone and was like oh my gosh, windchill is 8!!! we have to be careful with that. Ha. We ended up having hot cocoa after though so it was alright

I agree it does reduce the anxiety, so we start that way all the time, when it will be too cold coming up, I'll just be sitting there, super anxious for the first 20 min or so
Thanks for this!

Almost 4 decades ago, I used to walk with my psychiatrist (back when they did talk therapy) and it was very beneficial. It cut down on 50 minutes of muteness.

Fast forward 20 plus years ago, I used to take my infant to therapy and by the crawling stage, my therapist and I would push him in his coach as we did therapy. I highly recommend it if both are up to it. Some may see it as a boundary violation.

It is being recommended by the American Psychological Association.

Glad it's working for you.

We used to go for walks around the clinic. If I behaved myself, I got a biscuit. Woof.

I would love it if my T did that, I think walking helps talking, as you're not overthinking, it just comes naturally and maybe it would be more like a true conversation.

I didn't even know walking was a thing, but I suppose if the setting and weather was right I wouldn't mind it. However in the area I am I don't think it would be therapeutic in the slightest, loud busy and cars! I like the peace in the room too much and I'd probably get distracted!

Sorry to go off topic.... you thought 9° was cold? It's that right now in England, and it's classed as 'a lovely day'.

I think I need to move.

Last winter, we had -20°

The record for the county I live in is -26°.

I love walking, too. But we have to wrap up warmly. It's easy to get caught out by a sudden drop. Now you know why Brits are obsessed with talking about the weather.

37.8° is the hottest it's been.

I'll duck out now.

I walk with my therapist downtown every session for 30 min. Then come back and chat or play a game.

Well our faces were cold, he was the one who was shocked at the temp. I'm used to it, I walk daily with my dog in the cold or hot.

I believe the difference is because of celsius versus Fahrenheit

I've had a look on a converter. 9℃ the temp here in England today is 48.2℉.
Does that make any sense to anyone?

It would probably depend upon where you are in the united states as to whether 48 F would be considered cold in November or not. I consider 48 F to be cold weather. Not as as bad as 2 F - but not what I consider pleasant.

I've never gone on a walk with my T, that sounds interesting. It might me helpful sometimes... there was one day I got really triggered and dissociated bad. It took probably about 30 minutes to get me responding again. We went downstairs and outside so I could smoke, because she asked if what I would normally do, and that was it. And that did help, going outside.

9 F is decidedly frigid around here. Dangerously cold for the old, infirm, very young etc.

I don’t walk with my t. I think I would find it a bit uncomfortable. I walk & chat with my friends & dog walk too, so it would feel very weird for me. I think I like the security of his office which is always the same & now feels very safe. I’m also hypervigalent so I’d be more concerned about who was behind me or coming towards me etc & how their eyes were. I’d not be able to concentrate. Then, what if someone overheard me? OMG! anxiety just thinking about it.
Thanks for this!
