I am in Kolonaki square in Athens.

I am hungry. There are two cafes on one side of the square.

But by choosing one over the other you’re indicating your political preferences. And I can’t remember which is which.

So I’m sort of casually wandering back and forth trying to spot the newspapers being read in each cafe.

Possibly I should just go to the Starbucks down a side street.

Seems like a cop out.

I feel desperate.

Everyone keeps talking about how you’re able to change things, how you have an influence on the things that are happening to you

The whole concept of dbt and cbt is based on that

But it’s just not true. You don’t have any influence, you can do what you want but life will just suck anyway.

Big time. There’s no point.

Has anyone run a background check on someone else? I want to run one on a creepy relative, but I don't know which service to use and whether or not creepy relative will be notified.

I don't get the whole dbt/cbt thing either. I'm sorry you're having a hard time. I wish I had something useful to say.

I admire the older returning students that I have. Sometimes they are a little zealous/earnest for my particular bent, but they are often more dedicated to actually learning stuff than my younger ones.

Some things you can control, others not. I guess the point is to know which are which.

Hi couch. T in 3 hours...

My son made it safely to Missouri last night, apparently my mom whisked him away from my sister first thing this morning haha. Sis met him at airport something after midnight last night and was still asleep when he went with Grandma this morning. Well he's there until 12/30 so they should have time to share him!

Hope it goes well with T today...have you decided yet if this will be your last session?

This is what I hated about CBT too. (I don't know enough about DBT to hate it.) I just started reading a book called Upward Spiral that has a neuroscience-based take on recovering from depression (and recovering from the feeling that everything is terrible in general). It seems much more reasonable and likely to work than a lot of the other things I have read or heard. When I am really depressed, that Pollyanna stuff about just changing your perspective to change your mood really, really pisses me off. The Upward Spiral stuff didn't inspire those same feelings of rage.

Regardless, I hope you're feeling better soon.

Thx - I looked the book up, it sounds good. I’ll see if I can find the pdf, the upcoming holidays most definitely haven’t made my finances any better. I’m sorry you’re struggling with this too, but glad I’m not the only one who basically jumps when she hears the cbt-stuff

I'm not sure where you live, but maybe a public or university library has it? I have access to a university library, and they will get me anything I want via interlibrary loan for free.

Yeah, there are plenty of us in the CBT haters club here. I was thinking about suggesting we get matching jackets...?
