I think maybe I wrote an adderall-fueled essay in college about how eating ones peas with a fork is an inherently political statement? Something about Heidegger? Das Man?

Haha. Sometimes my education tingles, like a phantom limb.

Wait, we're supposed to be eating peas with a fork? Like, stabbing them individually or loading them up on top?

You know, a spoon was really designed for that type of loose load situation...

I eat my peas with honey,
I've done it all my life.
It makes the peas taste funny,
But it keeps them on my knife.

I have never said it and I never will.
i don't think supporting government propoganda or encouraging those swayed by it is a good idea.

I remember being little and eating at a family friends place and the potato wasnt mashed so i didnt know how to eat the peas so inate them scooped up on my fork and my mum chided me for it, but friend said "its ok we can pretend we are in America" everyone laughed i did not understand why. It seemed a reasonable solution.

I should say I still find the idea of eating peas in any separate way (and not a part of some other dish) — with a fork or spoon or anything else — a tad puzzling, in and of itself.

i mean i haven't had peas since i was a kid...but i definitely wouldn't think "ahh, a fork!" when eating peas

i don't know many veterans minus grandparents, but if someone said they were a vet, i wouldn't automatically say "thank you for your service." no way.

Walking by, so I'll jump in. I'm on the younger end of the Vietnam generation, and many I know of the same age experience patriotism differently from GenX/millenials. I never heard the thanking for service phrase until after 9/11, so I assumed it was a part of the redefinition of patriotism and how/when it's demonstrated that came with that administration and the influence of legislation like the Patriot Act. I also saw a huge increase in flag displays, and have even heard the phrase extended to police/fire fighters/EMT personnel--which strikes me as nuts because nobody thanks teachers, nurses, customer service folks or anyone else who has a public service job.

I think part of it is, people who as a regular part of their job put life and limb at risk on a daily basis. So we thank them for doing that, so that we may enjoy the freedoms we do.

It might be comforting to hear someone say, "I always thought he'd end up in jail.". It would reinforce the fact that it wasn't your fault.

they chose it and do it for reasons that are not wholly altruistic. I don't believe in thanking someone for doing the job they chose to do and sometimes chose for extremely scary reasons, or having been manipulated and brainwashed by hyped up propaganda, or fake news or an adrenaline junkie who found an outlet where they would also get paid etc.

Yeah; first of all, the jobs are not typically the most dangerous acc to stats. But also, I don't see what "freedoms" their actions allow me to enjoy--seems to me that too many people are more at risk from the police than protected by them.
Thanks for this!

Freedom to state your opinion. Freedom to dance in a pornographic manner in public (saw that in the news today re cambodia). Freedom to drive yourself (if youre a woman) to a male doctor and be alone in a room with him. Freedom to keep your medical info private. Freedom to vote. Stuff like that.
Thanks for this!

I don't believe the military and certainly not the police have anything to do with that. I believe the people who enlist because they think that about themselves need to undergo some sort of psychological evaluation. why do you think they try and get 18-year-olds to enlist? because they are easy targets for such propaganda, don't have that much of a fear of death, and are easily trained and brainwashed by holding out concepts such as brotherhood, family, belonging, becoming Men, they get to shoot things and drive big tanks.

If you really had the freedom to express your opinion, and everyone believed this why do so many threads here degenerate into a s hi t fight?
