A screaming, toothless, fist clenched, toes curled, in a crib, turning red baby.

When a child’s emotional needs are not met and a child is repeatedly hurt and abused, this deeply and profoundly affects the child’s development. Wanting those unmet childhood needs in adulthood. Looking for safety, protection, being cherished and loved can often be normal unmet needs in childhood, and the survivor searches for these in other adults. This can be where survivors search for mother and father figures. Transference issues in counseling can occur and this is normal for childhood abuse survivors. |

I said "full of fear"
T said..... Thsts interesting because when I think of a baby, I see a tiny baby And mother together. I can't visualise a, baby without its mother" She stumped me. I think for me Thats telling. Abandoned by both mother and neglected by adoptive mother. Mother and baby isn't ingrained in Pysche. |

I was never abandoned by my mom but my image of a baby doesn't include a mom.

I also didn't see the baby alone - I saw myself with it. That's interesting.

A helpless child that naturally loves their parents.
I didn't picture myself with the baby or with a mother, just by itself. |

I see me looking and a small and vulnerable, innocent little one needing connection, protection and love.

When I visualize a baby, I see myself holding the baby, or the baby is looking at me like I am talking to it.

My first thought was a baby in her crib cold, crying, and left alone.

Do you mind my asking if you're a mom, WarmFuzzySocks? Feel free to answer or not. I'm not a mom - which is why I find it odd that I visualized myself holding the baby.

This question makes me think of the thing about the Trees. People look at a tree and notice things about it like it might be bent to one side, or tall and straight, or be bare and dead or lush and green or whatever. And people don't judge the tree for what it has become, they just accept "well it it bent that way because it grew in the wind", or "it is brown and dying because it didn't get enough water", or "it is growing beautifully because it has all that needs." They don't judge it, they just accept it is what it is because of all the conditions it grew in.
But when people look at a human being they judge it instead, they say You should be more this or they should be more that or this person is too much of this thing. They don't see it like the tree. But people are just like the trees and much of how they grow and what they do is because of all the things they experienced or didn't experience, or had or didn't have. So when I think of a baby I see a tiny human being, perfect in every way, eager and ready to interact with the world and Become. I don't see any adults with it, just a perfect baby on its own. Waiting to Become. What it will Become is entirely dependent on the people who enter or don't enter the space around it, and what they do there. But on its own, in the beginning, that baby is perfect. |
