Hi all
I'm sure this has come up before but has anyone done any EMDR work and if so, was it useful?
Thank you!

Seriously depends on the clinician. They can seriously mess it up or it can be a life saver.

I would be interested to hear other responses too.

I had my first EMDR session recently. The actual session I found strange and slightly scary because it was different to usual therapy. I had no idea what to expect in terms of what I would think of feel or say, or how I would know if it was working. It was also weird because the T doesn't really say much or discuss what is happening while it is happening. Apparently that would interfere with the process. So all that was a bit scary for me. The good thing is, it seems to have worked. I can think about the particular memory we worked on without having a surge of adrenaline or a massive physical reaction to it.

I have been seeing an EMDR T every other week for about 10 months. It is definitely different. Initially we both thought I would go to her for just EMDR because I have a long term talk therapist as well. It didn't work that way. On our second appointment we jumped into Emdr. We didn't that for a couple appointments and I told I was struggling be ause I needed to work on building trust before I could delve right in. She was very understanding. We started back with EMDR and then realizes a huge part of my problem is not feeling or tolerating emotions. So now we assre working on resource building. Definitely not how I thought EMDR would go it I am seeing slow progress. Fortunately, T is very understanding and patient.

I did have a consult with another Emdr T before this one. It felt horrible. Thought it might be because I was trying a new modality. Processed it with long term T she agreed it was awful and I should avoid seeing her again.

I'm on my second round of EMDR and do well with it - it's a strange thing but effective.

For me, EMDR has been a slow process, but I feel like it is helping. My T is good and very patient with me, so that helps. I can see how it might not be a good method for everyone or for every T.
