I’m just looking for some ideas about how to handle an anniversary with my therapist. Has anybody discussed this with their therapists and if so, have you done anything to celebrate it or had specific discussions about it or done anything related to it together with your T? My T has asked me if I would like to do anything to celebrate the day during our session, and I don’t know exactly what to say. I can’t think of any good ideas of what might feel good to do with her. Thanks.

On my first anniversary with Dr. T, I sent him an email mentioning it was my "thera-versary" and saying I was appreciative of how he'd helped me, stuff like that. He responded positively. I didn't send anything for the 2-year 2 months ago because we'd actually taken a break then... I think it could be good to discuss your relationship and progress maybe?

We always say we’ll do something to commemorate our time together (over 8 difficult years), but we never end up doing anything. I’m a fan of sharing a good baked food or something like that and enjoying the moment.

I have to giggle. T is gone the month of November and when he returns it is one week before our one year anniversary... T was shocked I knew! The session before he left I talked a lot to him about my first impressions and all the things he did right and all the things about him/his office that helped me feel safe... and the one thing that almost made me not work with him. His first session back I just want to connect. The anniversary I want to review/update goals as a lot of them have changed because of the work we have done this past year. I will probably talk to him about how that week had been an important one many years ago and why it is especially nice to have my anniversary with him that week.

For my 4 year anniversary with T, I treated myself the whole day: ate nice food, went to my favorite store, took a bath, etc. Then I made her a custom card off zazzle, and bought her some rocks, and a journal from my favorite store. I couldn't give them to her during our anniversary because she was on maternity leave, but I did gice them to her when she got back. She really appreciated them.

I never remember things like this. I'm sure my T had record of my first appointment somewhere but it just wasn't on my radar.

I just celebrated my 25th anniversary with my psychiatrist. I wrote him a letter on nice stationary and "loaned" him a book I knew he was interested in reading. Last year I published a book in his honor. It's kind of hard to top that though.

Ha! The therapist probably couldn't even guess the season of the year I started talking to her!

It's never been a big deal for T, nor 'celebrated' as such...

That is a good question. I never really thought of acknowledging our anniversary with them. I do wonder if the remember. I suspect EMDR T does because we started working together right when she opened her private practice. We had been communicating before hand and just waited for everything to be finalized. I actually started before all the paperwork to be finalized so she could bill my insurance.

Maybe a nice card??
