Does your therapist ever smile In sessions? How does it make you feel?

My therapist smiles in a certain way that I’ve only seen people who are assholes smile, or people who have crushes on other people. She’ll like turn her head and try to hide a smile when I say something. Even if it’s not funny. One time I said I didn’t know what I wanted to talk about and she stared at me and smiled really big for several seconds.

It doesn’t really bother me.

She does when appropriate. We often will throw in bit of sarcasm and humor. She also sometimes smiles at the end of the session and is saying goodbye

Sure. Sometimes it's about something I've said, something it's because he's reminded of something else. It sounds like your T might be reminded of something funny. You can always ask, she might tell you.

Yes. Pretty natural responses I guess to whatever is going on. We did a lot of laughing actually - we have similar senses of humor.

I never looked at the woman that much. If she smiled or made any other face that I saw, it seemed like a ploy of some sort - doing empathy at me or trying to bond or some such nonsense

When appropriate. We had a pretty funny conversation about motivational interviewing yesterday.

Rarely smiles since we've moved online.

But laughing a lot more, which shows another (i.e. human) side to T.

Yes, she does. I'm grateful for it, because it reassures me that some aspect of the connection remains.
It's a sincere smile.

He'll smile and also joke around with me some. It helps me feel more connected. One thing I miss about moving online is seeing him smile when he'd open the door and see me in the waiting room. I mean, he still kinda smiles when I pop up on Zoom, but it's not the same. He is good at doing the smiling with his eyes thing, too (for those familiar with America's Next Top Model, "smizing").

He smiles sometimes when I look at him (which is like once a session) and sometimes he laughs about jokes.

My T has a couple of smiles with me. The glad to see me (after we’ve he has been away or something), the I’m proud of you smile, and the you’re being a little s*t but it’s funnt smile. They are all kind and appropriate to the situation.

It would be odd if a therapist didn't smile. It's a fundamental method of human communication and for that to be absent in any kind of sustained relationship would be strange. Even my therapist manages to do it.

I think so. I'm pretty sure she does when we say hello and goodbye. It would kind of be weird if she smiled a lot, though, because it would be inappropriate to the conversations we usually have.

Her most frequent expression is of confusion. I claim credit for that.

I think she does. I can't really remember, it's been so long since I've seen her in person. She usually has a "thoughtful" look on her face.

Yeah--my T smiles 'hello' when we first see each other, over Zoom or in person. I guess it's a bit of an awkward smile but he's sort of an awkward guy *shrug*
