I need some help if anyone is willing. Please be gentle. This is a hard topic for me. So my teeth are really bad. I have 5 crowns up top with one only being supported by a post. No other teeth up top. I just developed an infection on one of those teeth and it might need to be pulled. Here's my dilemma: the dentist wants to pull all my teeth up top because that's where I'm heading anyways. My family wants me to save my teeth. If money isn't involved, what would you choose? Save the teeth or take the plunge and remove them all?

If money wasn't a factor, I'd get them pulled and have implants put in. Megabucks though. In the meantime, if they are really beyond repair, have them pulled and get partial dentures.
Thanks for this!

I agree. Keeping teeth that aren't in good shape only costs more in the long run, sometimes it even impacts your health.

I'm ashamed of the state of my teeth. When I was deeply depressed I would sometimes go days without brushing them. Now I brush them every morning, but I can't find the wherewithal to brush them at night. Last few checkups have been okay, though, minus one filling that got chipped and needed replaced.

I’d get them removed if you can.

MP—first thing to go around self-care for me is brushing at night. I find if I make myself do it I feel and sleep better, but I still can’t always make myself do it.

I'm almost done with a great deal of major dental work. I'm older and from an area that didn't have fluoridated water, and my old fillings were those old amalgam fillings. My teeth had started to crack and break in my later years. I was really embarrassed about them, but my dentist put my feelings at ease. Those old kinds of fillings are notorious for breaking down over time - they start expanding and contracting, causing what is left under them to crack and fail. It is a very, very common issue for people as they get older.

We came up with a plan to do a section at a time. Lots of crowns, etc. I have one last section that will require a partial denture. It will have to wait until insurance re-ups in a few months. Once I get that section done, I'll be all fixed. It's the best thing I've done for myself in a long while.

My dental phobia gets worse the older I get. I haven't been to the dentist since I had to have a tooth pulled like 3 or 4 years ago now. I need to go again and I know it. But have not been able to make myself and I don't know if I even can now because of Covid, it's not an emergency situation or anything, nothing hurts or whatever. I just know I need to get a check up because it's been so long. I brush every morning but only sometimes at night. I think I must have really done my teeth a favor by quitting drinking soda in january of 2018.

Ty all. I should have been more clear, my fault. Right now I have upper partials.

Option 1: Remove 1 tooth, get new partials that are attached to compromised (aka crowned) teeth ($1700)
Option 2: Remove 5 teeth, get full upper partials ($4800)

Implants are not an option

The dentist doesn't think I need upper implants anyways.

Going back in to the dentist the first time when I hadn't been in a long while was stressful, but I have a really wonderful dentist who was very matter-of-fact about it. No shaming at all. Simply a plan to turn things around a step at a time. It will be about a two year journey from start to finish but once I got through that initial appointment, I felt no more anxiety about going.

well that was a heck of a good deal!! my textbook for fall semester (I'm taking Psych Research Methods) came today, from my school's bookstore it was really expensive - even used it was like $167 and new was $245. i found it used on amazon for around $70, it just said "good" condition but I was like eh for 70 bucks I'll put up with somebody else's highlighting or whatever. Anyway it came today and it looks and smells brand new! Yay!

So you'd have a full upper denture? I'd go for that if I had the money probably.

They'll probably have to go eventually. Just seems like a full denture might be less hassle in the long run.

I get that, but won't the full denture look better than just five teeth with crowns?

Look at like it's a new start, a second chance?

@@ - i would guess the disability center has it wrong. The policy says its for students, but its under a broader policy that says accommodations are for all students and employees. This is ridiculous, and i am so angry on your behalf.

Road trip? Break some knees?

I don't really understand the division of responsibility between ADA office (employee) and disability center (student) either. They did interact over my request for accommodations for the fall, to see what alternatives were out there, so why they have no plan for something like this...

Dental talk yuck i need several teeth out but the govt clinic takes years to get dentures made. Also there is more than year waitlist but my dental phobia is so bad i go 10 years without seeing a dentist

In other news my little dog is having his teeth cleaned and some removed, even though he is annoying i still miss not having him right beside me wherever i turn.

You know me so well!

I say go online and find your college or university's top policy for ADA. The one that says for all people there. I dont think they have 2 policies. They have 1, and they have 2 applications. But they cant say you are not covered under the student, because that would mean you are not covered AT ALL, which is not true, because you are covered under the TOP policy. Get me?

I dont even NEED stopdog on this one!! Lemme at 'em!

Eta - i know - they dont know who to charge the work to.

Sooo I don't understand why UPS charges to pick up a package, when FedEx and USPS don't. These are prepaid, return packages. UPS wanted to charge me $10. Um, no.

Agreed, as I've run into the same thing. It's really annoying! Especially because they tend to deliver on my street most days, so they'd be here anyway. USPS will pick stuff up for free (didn't know Fedex did as well).

ATAT - I hope they figure it out soon. My school is so confused about what is going on in the fall that it is taking them some time to work out this sort of stuff but I am sorry to hear they are being jerks about it.

Exhankster - you go girl

Exactly; they are on my street every day anyway! Yes, I scheduled a pickup recently online for FedEx and it was free, happily.

I withdrew my D from school today and i dont know why i feel like a bad parent when everyone agrees its the best thing for her. Her anxiety around school was awful. She is not stupid and is very smart and i hope she enrols in the animation classes next year.

Thirty minutes until all the ******** started three years ago. Although that's not exactly right; the ******** started way before 9 pm that day. I just didn't know where we were headed yet. I've been avoiding, avoiding, avoiding today.
