Types of therapy pulled from various Psychology Today profiles. Just pick the one that suits you best.

I put whatever you left out. I would be eclectic. Both former T and current T are eclectic which I think means they use whatever they pull out of their heads at the moment. OR sometimes out of somewhere else! But they have both been very good T's for the most part. I would absolutely NOT be a CBT T. But really I can't think of myself being a T. I don't even like to listen to my own problems.

I wanted to do a doctorate in child and adolescent psychoanalytic psychotherapy since I was like 16.

I would be person centred ( IÂ’m not sure if thatÂ’s the same as humanistic? I voted for that). This means I would focus on understanding the client, their views, their thoughts and feelings, the way they want to do therapy, what they feel they need in therapy. I wish I could find a T who would work in this way.
Thanks for this!

I'm not knowledgeable enough to know what the various types of therapy entail. But I've thought a number of times recently that it would be nice to be a therapist who works with the elderly to help them "sum up" their lives, so to speak... in other words help them look back to resolve past hurts, failures, misfortunes, losses, etc. Perhaps that would make me humanistic? I could perhaps qualify to do this in my state without too much difficulty. But I'm too old, too tired & too warped myself to be of help to anyone else.

I picked whatever was left out. T is trauma informed and I would likely do the same and be very eclectic in my treatment modality.

What an outstanding idea! I've never happened across such a therapist, but they must exist..."geriatric therapist", perhaps? I know there are T's who work with seniors who are ill (and their families).

I chose psychodynamic, but I'm not sure of the difference between that and humanistic. I think being an analyst would be really interesting, but after a while I'd miss seeing people's faces and having full conversations.

I chose an art therapist. I wanted so bad to be a T and to learn about it all, but I could only apply to a masters in art therapy as I only have an art degree from before. I didn’t get accepted though so I guess we will never know. I would totally just choose to do normal therapy over art, but it seems like you need a lot of qualifications and money that I just don’t have.

@emmaleemochizuki
I have been in therapy since I was a child, but only understood what psychotherapy actually was when I was about 30. I still don’t know what a doctorate is. How did you know you wanted to do that so young?

I guess it's just interest. I knew I wanted to study Psychology and I was searching for what I can potentially do with a psychology degree. It actually didn't stem from my experience in therapy as much, but because I really wanted to work with children and adolescents, and I prefer a psychoanalytic/psychodynamic way of working. My dream place to study is at the Anna Freud centre, which is linked with UCL and I'm hoping to do a master there, then a clinical doctorate which will qualify me as a psychoanalytic psychotherapist specialising in children.
Thanks for this!

Thanks for the reply. ah yes other people have interests and know things when they were young, I forgot again! Sorry, I am just too stupid to know how stupid I really am. Your plan sounds amazing, good luck with it all.

Hey please don't feel stupid. You are wonderful just as you are. Some people have goals and plans, and some people just work better spontaneously. Everyone is different. I just personally feel safer knowing a concrete path in front of me, hence probably why I chose a career like becoming a T because it is very clear what I need to do. However others prefer to improvise, and that's fine too.

I would never be a therapist. Not because I'd not like the profession, but I'd have such a hard time setting appropriate boundaries and caring for myself while doing that job, I couldn't imagine it going well.

I would never be a therapist because I think they are grifters and charlatans.
