I met with my pdoc today.. just a "check-up" sort of thing. She acts mostly as a T for me, as I don't have one at the moment... Anyways, we got talking about relationships in my life that have had a significant affect on me, but are no longer present. We were talking about one woman in particular, and I was telling her about how we don't have much contact anymore. I went into further detail about why that is, and how i felt there wasn't much I could do about it, as i was in the same situation at this time last year.
Anyways, she then pointed out that I really had all-or-none thinking. The second she said that I thought "Bam, cognitive distortion #1" lol. But i'm a little uncertain to how i can "fix" this way of thinking... its not that i don't recognize it, if anything i'm constantly seeing that my way of thinking (in this situation) is black and white, rather than shades of grey. But while i can acknowledge it, how to i go about changing my thinking so that it's not so all or nothing? Any suggestions?

You correct as you go along. It's not like you suddenly wake up and don't do it anymore; it's like doing a math paper and having a bunch of mistakes which you fix. By fixing them you learn to understand the problems better and make fewer mistakes the next time, fix those, and continue. The more complex or difficult the problem the more likely one is to make a mistake of some sort when working on it. It's not bad to make mistakes, that's how we learn!
