I'm writing an online therapist (she has a regular private practice but also does online therapy) and she's also a college professor. The other day she sent me the link for a review of a book she's written (and so, I bought the book :-) Has your T written any books or articles you've read? How did you feel about them?

My therapist hasn't, but he's expressed a desire to write a book.
Before I even could think the thought, I blurted out "Don't you dare use me in that!" He said it wasn't that kind of book he had in mind. I think I would prefer that he didn't. I know I'd read it, and I'd be afraid it would contradict the image I have of him. It would be fine if I didn't think I knew him. But as it stands, I'd just as soon he not disclose so much that he makes me think I've been totally wrong about him. How did you feel about what your therapist wrote? Did it confirm what you already thought about her? Was it admirable? I did have an adjunct therapist who recommended that I read his book. I didn't care much for him, and wasn't crazy about the book. But I think I liked the book better than I liked him.

My T has not published yet, but is working on publishing her thesis. After I read it I told her it was something that NEEDED to be available to the public. I also told her I need to know where to buy one since reading it only once was not enough. It was loaded with helpful "situations" and reasoning. I told her if she wasn't going to pursue it that I would do it for her.
She told me a while back that she had contacted a publisher. I haven't heard anything about it in a while. Thanks for the reminder to ask. |

My T has written several small guides for women with trauma histories and a full book on treating PTSD. I read it and really liked it, and felt I learned a lot from it. She also does a lot of lecturing / training for other mental health care professionals and she's told me that she's used me as a case study a couple of times, annonymously of course, but it still felt really weird.

He has told me he is working on a book or plans to write one in the future. It was strange to learn that, as I have also thought about writing a book with some overlapping content to the one T is thinking of writing. Strange! He told me once that a phrase I said in therapy would make a great title for a chapter of his book. But he hastily reassured me that he would ask my permission before using anything from our sessions. I would love to read his book.
Perna, how has reading your T's book made you feel? Is it about psychotherapy?

Not to my knowledge and actually if he did I wouldn't share because then my cover might be blown!

No, the book is about. . . books
![]() But while reading may have expanded my imagination and broadened my inner life, it also narrowed my outer one, turning me from an ordinary, introspective teenager into a barely functional recluse. Although I hardly noticed it, buried in the attic with my books, at some point during my teenage years my dad moved out, my brothers dropped out of school and left home, and my mother rented out their empty rooms.

I guess I'm glad I'm just e-mailing her rather than having to read that and see her face-to-face? ![]()

Yeah...my T has a book about me entitled "Pain in the *** on the Couch: Avoid at all Costs"
![]() Actually most T's with a PhD will have published at least one article. You can look into something that is a journal database and type your T's name into the search engine and get T's article titles. |
