Hello there,

I shall cut this short New and interested in Psychotherapy.. After undertaking a course of CBT a few years back the therapist recommended I undertake Psychotherapy. I was then passed from pillar to post and was eventually offered counselling...again....which I refused as I was excited at the prospect of undertaking some therapy that might really benefit me.

So I am now wondering how I might go about getting involved in psychotherapy again? And how useful people have found it?

Thank you x

I think "psychotherapy" can mean many different things. What do you visualize when you use that term?

The therapist at the time discussed working through things that had happened in the past, right back through to childhood, starting there and working through. She said it wouldn't be easy but I was and am keen to try anything that may help :Sx

Thank you, That's what I wanted to hear. How do I get to partake in it though? Back to my doctors and specify that's what I want? I don't want to get passed around counsellors again New and interested in Psychotherapy.. x

You could read up on the different types of psychotherapy (e.g. psychodynamic, CBT, DBT, humanistic, experential, etc. etc.) and identify one or two approaches that sound like what you want. Then seek out therapists who have that training and approach. Go to interview a few and choose the one with whom you click.

I am not sure doctors even know that much about the different types of psychotherapy so I'm not sure how fruitful that approach would be. But it doesn't hurt to cast a wide net in a search and get recommendations from a lot of people, so by all means, ask your doc.

How I found my current T was rather indirect: my sister was having lunch with a colleague of hers, who it turns out has worked professionally with my T. So his name was given to my sister who passed it on to me. Kind of roundabout, but it worked!
