I first saw my therapist about 4 weeks ago, originally referred by my doctor because of my self harm and suicidal thoughts. And I saw him again last week, it was the second and last time as he 'discharged' me. Both of my sessions only lasted about 20mins and neither of them helped me. The only advice he gave me, and literally the only advice, was to go to a gay/lesbian group for 'support' as I'm sexually confused. But I can't do that, as I find it incredibly hard to talk to people, especially if it's about something I'm not comfortable talking about. He didn't help me with my self harm, and he didn't even mention my suicidal thoughts.
I also told him about me having low self-esteem but he said that that'll improve when I know my sexually orientation. Fair enough, it might, but he also said that some people never find out what their orientation is. So where does this leave me? I'm so confused at the moment!

Sounds like your therapist is a bit ineffective in really helping you... that's okay, whatever works for some people might not work for others. Can you go back to your doctor and ask for a referral to someone else, maybe with training in helping those with self-harm and/or suicidal thoughts?

Not sure if I can, at least for free. He's paid for by my universities health centre, and I can't afford to pay for private treatment. But I am going back to my doctor, I'm booked to see her next week about a swollen knuckle.
Though, I'm probably best dealing with it myself, I've never been much for talking about things (in particular emotions). Thanks for the quick response, and advice ![]()

Hey. I suggest you return to the college counseling center and request to see the Director of Intake, or Intake Coordinator, or Director of Counseling or the Director of the Center (depending on the levels). You will have to make an appointment.
Explain your situation to the person at the front desk and they will direct you to the appropriate person. You need treatment and most college counseling centers will provide treatment. Some have rules like 20 sessions or 30 sessions, but you are ENTITLED to counseling because you pay the student fees (which cover things like this). Now, obviously the therapist you saw was confused and should not have "discharged" you. Do not give up. And make sure you tell the person you next meet with exactly your symptoms ~ SI, suicidal thoughts, etc. Good luck. |
