Earthmama and Pachyderm-- this is what I was thinking. I read the original entry and I immediately thought of projection and transference. I imagine it would be extremely difficult to figure out a particular T's motive for becoming a T unless he told you the actual reason. It sounds like experiences with your mother, combine with prior Ts, may be instrumental in your feelings.

Most importantly, have you spoken to him about this? I would say this all definitely needs to be worked through.

Most therapists practice with the knowledge that it is the clients who are doing the work, and the clients who are making the changes. I would hope that most therapists do not see a client's change as a measure of their own worth as a therapist.
