I am going to see a psychiatrist tomorrow for anxiety issues, insomnia, and depression. My general doc has been treating me for this, but I am still having anxiety issues and insomnia and some mild depression. Should I continue to see my general doctor or is a psychiatrist more equipped and more acknowledged regarding these problems? Do psychiatrists generally treat people with anxiety and depression or do they just treat people with more serious issues? Thank you for your help.

It really depends on the psychiatrist. Don't know what it is like where you are, but where I live, many psychiatirsts just manage meds and you're lucky if you can get more than 15 minutes with them a month just to monitor the meds. Others offer psychotherapy, and have weekly sessions with their patients. A psychiatrist would have a lot more knowlegde than your general doctor.
Thanks for this!

Hi anxietygirl,

Yes, I would think it's worth a try to see the psychiatrist for a consultation at this point if you've seen your regular doctor for treatment, and you're still having symptoms. Psychiatrists treat many different kinds of problems, including anxiety and depression. The psychiatrist may be able to suggest medications or treatments that will help you feel better. Good luck! I hope it helps, and you'll soon be feeling better.

Take care,
ErinBear

anxiety girl - i think it's a great idea to see a pdoc, also. sometimes your pdoc might take over your care, so that you consult with him/her regularly, or they might just do an indepth assessment and make recommendations for your GP so that your GP can continue your treatment.

I definitely think a pdoc will have more experience dealing with the kinds of issues you are having....I know finding the right combination of meds can be tricky. I hope you are able to get some help when you see him tomorrow!!

Thanks for this!

I will let you know how it goes. I am just going to be honest and tell him how I have been feeling. There is just no reason to suffer.

Definitely the pdoc has more experience and can adjust meds more confidently than the primary care physician. I started with my doctor but then moved onto a pdoc, because my symptoms were still problematic and I needed his expertise.

Good luck.

Thank you, you made me feel so much better. I was worried about going to a pdoc after being treated by my family doctor, but I feel better now knowing that someone else has done the same thing. I just really feel the pdoc will be able to help me more with the medications. Thank you and have a wonderful day.
