The wives said that until you learn otherwise, it’s never a good idea to shake him awake or otherwise startle him (see #2). Their advice was to get rid of the alarm, put it as far away as possible or muffle it. Better yet, the wife could get up early to wake him gently. (That goes for #1, too.) I did need to use this tip. Get a broom, approach slowly from the door with broom extended and the happy talk (see #1). When in range, say, “I’m going to gently touch you on the shoulder.” And then GENTLY touch him with the broom. Success. It worked.
