Can an individual be too empathetic ?

I would say no.
The reasons problems happen with people who feel a lot of empathy are likely due to not setting boundaries, not being assertive enough. I don't think empathy in and of itself is a problem at all - it's how we use it and react to it that can be healthy or not. I think empathy can engender compassion and growth, or, it can lead to manipulation of the empathic person via unnecessary guilt or fear. This has been my experience. |

I equate empathy with putting yourself in someone's shoes. And that can be a good thing. So I think to answer your question, no. I don't think you can be too empathetic.

I agree with all the other poster and especially wolfsong's statement. Empathy is a wonderful quality but it can bring pain, so the person has to set careful boundaries not to invest too much of their heart.
