What can you recommend telling someone who asks about my family, but the situation involves my psych problem? I don't want to scare any new male (or other) friends away, but I do want to be honest. I believe that honesty is important in a relationship. How can I handle this?

Guess its up to you when meeting someone new how much family history you give them and when...but I firmly believe in honesty as well...but there's also a time and a place to tell a special someone things. like not the first day you meet them lol

another thought....a simple..."it's a painful part of my life Im not quite ready to deal with or talk about yet" shoudl suffice. It isnt lying...lets them know there are problems...yet allows you for when the time is right

Yes I agree....honesty is good but full disclosure may not always be called for. It depends. Maybe just treat it on a "need to know" basis. I personally wouldn't advise divulging personal info to someone who is just asking out of curiosity. If you have no "tie" to that person.....if they are not emotionally connected or bound to you.......who's to say they won't misuse it? -Deb
