What do you say why people ask what you do (if you aren't working or studying)
Or where you go drinking?

I don't do anything right now, I want to get back to college though, my psychologist said I was too ill last time I was there.

I don't go drinking - I don't like crowded places and drinking makes me feel confused and paranoid, so I don't drink alcohol much.

It's usually a sincere and genuine attempt at small talk. If you want to converse with the person, you could be honest and say "nothing at the moment, but I want to get back to college" and "I don't frequent any bars because I don't particularly care for alcohol."

However, it's a question that irks me too sometimes because I'm disabled, mostly homebound and dying from a terminal illness. It's not the best "conversation starter" or way to make friends. Then again, if the person is a pest and you don't want to converse, feel free to use my answer - guaranteed to make them walk away.

If I am able, I use humor. I recently lost my job so if someone asks what I am doing now; I might respond "oh, you know, saving the world one fool at a time". But, that’s my personality and people who know me will leave it at that. Or just say "Unfortunately, I'm not working now. How are things with you? Redirect the attention back to the other person.

The whole drinking thing...sometimes that's people’s way of asking you if you want to socialize. Tell whoever you're not much of a drinker, but if they’re interested in meeting up for coffee, light meal etc., you're game.

PS...I am a workaholic and my job was very important to me so I get your discomfort. Best of luck with this.

I have a couple hobbies and mention them or talk about my desire to go back to school (I did that, including taking courses online) and just say I don't drink much but enjoy such-and-such restaurant when I go out to eat? Or a certain kind of food? (my husband loves Mexican :-)
