Does your mom live near you or other family? I don't know which would be harder. If she is close, and if you can't let her stay with you, that would be hard to deal with, but if she is far away that would be pretty tough too. As far as I know, I'm the only one in my family who has been homeless, and that was only for about a month. I have several clients who are homeless. You can't solve it for them, or all by yourself. Shelters are not ideal, but at least they are something. Shelters often have staff who work with people on establishing more stable housing and other related needs. If she has been in a state hospital, is there some followup or community mental health center that can also work with her on getting her needs met? You can only do so much, and you have to know your limits. You can encourage her to follow through with other resources, and to recognize what things she can do for herself, and help/encourage her to do what she is able to do.

I think if it was my Mom, I'd go and get her -- any way I possibly could.
