so how exactly do I know when a guy likes me? Y'all are crazy confusing..

I can give you a girl's perspective:

I tend to underestimate male interest. I sort of get it only after being presented with crystal-clear evidence. Before that, I tend to doubt and think "maybe he is just being friendly". Sometimes, I perceive male interest correctly in real time, but usually, with a delay. Perhaps you have the same issue.

that may be a useful heuristic, but only if OP initiates transactions/interactions. If she does not, there is nothing to respond to.

Also, some people are simply polite.
