I finally got out of my long term relationship! I don't know how to feel about it, but I know its for the better. He still wants to be friends, and I'm okay with that, but we're going to prom together this friday. I'm scared he might get mixed signals... do guys just process things differently than girls?

He says that he's just pretending everything is okay, but on the inside its killing him. You can see it all over his face. I feel bad, but I did what I had to do...

You shouldn't feel bad, you do what you had to to be happy. Perhaps you should go with a friend to prom instead? Giving him mixed signals might hurt him and that's definitely not a good thing.
I'm glad you were able to end something that didn't make you happy though!

Well I told him that it would probably be best for him to not go for that reason. I told him I would be mingling with my guy friends, and I didn't want that to make him turn bitter towards me. He's pretty much hell bent on going though

The present situation is a recipe for disaster. If you go and mingle with other guys its going to break his heart or make him very angry.

Why not go and mix with girlfriends only?

Going with him will just give him false hope. If he's determined enough he will take any scrap of attention as an invitation to try again with you. Its best to just scrap the prom plans. Sounds cold but stringing him along (even if its not what you are intending) will only hurt him more.

Yeah... I'm going to tell him tomorrow that he can't go. I'll just go with a group of friends. I don't want him to ruin the evening (whether it be unintentional or intentional)

that would be a great idea...give him some time to heal, right now he is just lying to himself and saying he is ok with it..for him to see you mingling with guy friends would crush him..he'll never admit it though. you are being a lot more mature about this than he is..he really needs to take some time to himself and process what he really wants..why he would want to do that to himself( go to prom with you is beyond me, emotional suicide there!) and he would only end up ruining your night.

You're gonna tell him he can't go? I hope that you didn't mean it as you said. How are you going to stop him from going at all?
