I have a relatively new friend who talks like a little child often. She has a normal grownup voice and is quite mature, but she often switches over to child voice. Actually, her whole facial expression and demeanor changes. When it happens it does seem to be a regression thing so I don't think I can really ask her about it without hurting her. She does other things that lead me to think she infantilizes herself or whatever as a protection mechanism. She chews with her mouth wide open and talks with it full, too. If she doesn't want to eat anymore she plays with her food for the rest of the meal. Those latter things don't bother me and none of the other people around her have ever mentioned anything about the voice so I figure I'm the only one bothered by it. I really don't want to be so what can I do? Plus, some part of me wants to ask her about it, which I think is not a great idea.

Your friend could have some kind of personality disorder and may benefit from your awareness if you can take your annoyance and transform it to compassion.
Personally I have never been able to change anyone, so I would not recommend trying that. Unless they bring it up, talking about it could hurt them. I agree with your idea not to bring it up. I see it as a learning experience. Learning about other people's unique personalities.
