I am a Hindu woman (27 years old) and my boyfriend of 61/2 years is Ismaili (28 years old)

We have been dating for the past 6 1/2 years and want to get married. We dated for 2 years before he moved across the country for work. Since then we've been in a long distance relationship. I told my parents about him at the 2 year mark and they did not take it well. Since then they have been hoping and trying to convince me to leave him.

Things have been heated lately because I have been pushing to be with him but they don't want to even consider him. It's torn my family apart and they are threatening to disown me if I choose to be with him. I think it's unfair for me to have to choose between him and my parents. I love my boyfriend very much and I also love my parents and don't want to hurt them. They think I am being selfish and naive and foolish.

Their reasoning is that they are looking out for my best interests and even though he is kind, educated, ambitious etc, he is only acting that way for now. And then after marriage he will turn on me. And they also believe in people who can 'tell the future' or read horoscopes...one person had told them that my bf is going to hurt me in the future and so that is their other reason for not wanting us to be together. I don't believe in that stuff so it's hard for me to take it seriously, but my parents honestly believe in this.

I have been living at home with them but with all the fighting and stress I can't handle it anymore and am planning on moving out. This also is upsetting them.

Do you think I am making the right decision to choose my partner over my parents? I feel like a horrible person sometimes and keep wondering if this is the right thing to do.

Sometimes parents eventually come around...

Both my sisters husband's (both Hindu) parents threatened to disown them. Things were tense and quite heated from the talks of marriage up until the first grandchildren were born.

That's when they decided to make peace and accept my sisters.

Idk what's right for you, but for both my brothers in law, things eventually worked out even though they chose my Christian mixed race sisters over their parents.
