Hello all,

I have this "little" problem: when I walk alone in a crowded street I don't really know where to look. I feel that I will be judged wherever I look. Where do you guys look if you are in the same situation?

Thanks

I look at the ground to make sure I don't trip and fall. But otherwise, I looked ahead of me.

Thanks. I also look at the ground partly to watch my step, but also because I feel shy. But when I do so, I feel that I am giving the message that I am not confident, especially most people don't look down and most of them don't fall!! When I look straight I feel that I am robotic, because I don't look right and left, and try to focus my head straight regardless of any distraction around me.

My vision has always been poor so when I look ahead I'm not distracted by people's expressions and therefore thoughts, unless they're going right past me. I guess the key is just not caring what anyone thinks, but that might not be easy if you have anxiety about it.

I know what you mean by robotic. Why can't you glance at distractions?

By distractions I mean the moving people around me. I feel anxious when looking at people. I always have this thought I am being judged of being impolite or rude especially when I look at women. I guess because I don't like people to look at me I do the same to them. But again it feels awkward.

Gotcha. I guess I never really cared where I looked because most things were a blur anyway. I was always self conscious about how I looked though. I'd say don't worry about it, but I guess that's easier said than done. Most people are in their own little world anyway when you look at them.

Knowing that everyone lives in his/her own world hasn't changed much though. Something unconscious happens. I guess this is one manifestation of my (self-diagnosed) social anxiety.

Thanks

I would avoid self diagnosing. Have you talk to a therapist about this?

I look mainly forward and down to watch where I'm going. I'll often give a small smile if I make eye contact with a passerby or thank them if they hold open a door for me, etc.

I am exactly the same. And it is even more intense when there happens to be a female in front of me. The weird thing is, females always seen to react oddly to me, like I just winked at then or something, even though I don't do anything like that. So I think I am unconsciously doing something.

For this no I haven't. Why, do you suspect something else?

But in a crowded street where the motion is slow all you will see ahead of you is heads. I keep moving my eyes around and pretend that I am in a rush.

Wear sunglasses , then no one can see your eyeballs and you can look where ever you want.

I love my sunglasses !

I almost always wear tinted glasses or shades when I'm in public so people can't see in my eyes to judge me or see just how little I care about socializing and also to be able to look where I want or even occasionally stare at a woman's breasts without her noticing

Also, when I really don't want to be bothered, I walk around with a big studio headset and an mp3 player and blast loud music so people really get the hint to leave me alone.
