Yeah well par for the course. Anyway, there is a mental health meet up group in my area - is this a good place to meet people or am I just asking for more anxiety? I'm sure the stories will be a little hard to listen to and I'm not exactly feeling that great right now. I guess the upside is that it's people and probably sympathetic. Yea or nay?

Not exactly a good place to meet people but could be a good place to air your probems in, hopefully, a supportive atmosphere.

I think the best is just go meet people with no dating plans. Just people to spend time with for now

While I do look forward to the social aspect of my support group I find myself careful not to socialize with the members outside of it.

while I made some really good friends at my support group, it was not a meetup kind of group, it was structured and sponsored, I also made the mistake of getting involved with one of the men there and it turned out REALLY bad and I ended up with my first ever psych hospital stay that lasted 2 weeks.
he had schizotypal personality disorder and after hanging out together for about 2 months as friends we had an intimate encounter...3 days later he became someone else, mean, scary and angry. I unfortunately had been manic for about 7 months by that time and I crashed into a depression and suicidal thoughts but he was the trigger. I haven't been back to a meeting since 2013 but for other reasons. the friends I made in 09 don't go either.
A good support group is good for just that, and possibly making some friends, but it is a terrible place to meet someone you would want to be involved with. at least that is my experience and that of a couple of other people I knew.

Certainly having mixed emotions about this one. The problem is I'll probably be thinking potential relationships - I'm very vunerable to anyone who pays attention to me. This is the nature of the beast unfortunately.

Perhaps you could just go to one and see what it's like...

Give it a whirl... Often I hear people hearing others situations and just knowing your not alone is empowering.
