I've been considering learning how to bike just so I can have some independence in my life again, I can't drive because of my poor eyesight which makes it so that I don't get to meet people that I don't see either at work or at home, and I'm getting extremely lonely. I'm tired of being alone and having no one to talk to but myself or my cats. Years ago I used Yahoo messenger to keep a pretty big circle of people to talk to, but nowadays it seems like you have to know anybody to talk to anybody, and it stinks when you don't know anyone. I've got a bunch of hobbies but that's no fun when you don't have anyone to share it with.

I think biking sounds like a wonderful idea.

Is there any Meetup groups in your area? for biking that can be a wonderful way to meet other people.

I know how it can get so lonely, I struggle myself with that also.

Meetup is a pretty great way to meet new people with shared hobbies. There are also forums and Facebook groups for nearly every interest you could possibly have. Whisper is a fun app to meet people anonymously. It's taken the place of yahoo chat for me lately.

Even with poor eyesight - could you do some volunteering with your choice of activities/groups/people/etc.?

I know what loneliness feels like. I think your idea about biking is great plus I agree with Rose3 that maybe you could find a group (community group/volunteers) that would match to your current hobbies?

Given that your eyesight makes driving unsafe, have you considered whether biking will be safe for you?

I hope it is.
