I didn't plan on going today, but one of my aunts keeps telling me she wants me to come along as well for Thanksgiving. A certain family member is always shaming me everytime I eat anything/I don't like sugary stuff or soda or junk/ yet literally shaming me everytime they see me eat anything. So, in your opinion, would it be rude of me if I just sat with everyone today when they ate and not eat anything? What would you do?

Most certainly it would look rather passive-aggressive if you don't eat at all. If these people treat you poorly just don't go. Have you ever confronted this obnoxious relative?

That's only going to call more attention to the issue. Just go and when the person starts shaming you tell her to cut it out right there in front of everybody. It doesn't have to become a scene, just a moment. You'll shame her right back and put a stop to it.

If I were you, I would politely turn down the invitation. Why expose yourself to insults? Get yourself a nice take out dinner and put on a good movie. Call your aunt later and ask about her day.

Keep in mind that I'm 23 years into my recovery process ...
1. If I didn't want to go, I wouldn't. 2. If I did want to go, I would. 3. I'd be myself. Oh, and about this "certain family member" that's been causing me shame and embarrassment about my food issues? ... When I got through humiliating the hell out of them in front of God and everybody else today, they'd NEVER even think it okay to make a comment to me or anybody else about my food issues EVER again! ... Let them experience what embarrassment and shame feels like for once in their life and see how they like it! Sincerely, Pfrog! ![]() |
