I don't know where to post this so I'm trying in here.

I have a question on my mind and I don't know the answer. Maybe you could help me with this.

Could someone say lies and really think or feel that it's true?

Thank you!

PS I'm talking about my husband.

Yep...I think the retelling of the "story" one believes it to be the truth.

Some people don't perceive things as they really are. They see them as they want them to be. Then there's people that just shoot off their mouth without thinking and they'll believe what they're saying. It doesn't take long for it to become truth to them.

I was married to someone like that a long time ago... and I know someone now that does that all the time. You can't believe a word that comes out of their mouth... yet they believe it's the truth.

Yeah, I had a best friend who would do that too. Her lies were blatantly obvious, but she really thought they were true.

How does anyone know whether someone thinks their lies are true? I can understand SM's point about misperceptions, and I get how people can delude themselves into believing things that aren't true, but I don't get how someone can deliberately lie and then believe it's the truth?

I'm not sure you can pin one item as truth or lie...

I think it is more in the consistency of their behavior...

Overall does this person behave/act/or whatever as his mouth says he does...

I think we have found a winner. By unanimous agreement, the answer is YES!

Kidding aside, it's interesting to learn that every single person who has responded believes unequivocally that we can say things that are lies and believe they are true.

I can think of two instances -- when a person is in denial and doesn't see reality clearly, as a previous writer noted. Sociopaths have a hard time distinguishing truth from lies, too. I'm sure there are other categories. I'm pretty sure that there have been times in my life when I might be unwittingly guilty of this.

Someone I know does this.

He "took" someone's story and made it his own. It was about physical child abuse in a real twisted way, so it was one you remembered. I know the person it really happened to so the blatant story-telling is...sad in a way.

I think he did this for attention at first?

He also took others stories and made them into his, especially ones about being "Mr. Tough Guy."

It's like living in a fantasy world.

He does have issues, a personality disorder, not sure which one.

But I agree with Wants, denial and a blurry sense of reality will do it.
