My parents make me see this counsellor the first time I saw him he told me he has autisim I was like ok. I already don't feel comfortable talking about depression so I really haven't yet. But I did bring up physical abuse(getting beat in the face/ head/ back for 12 years by a certain family member) the counsellor(don't know if autisim makes him a jerk or what), said "you probably did something to deserve it" I called him screwed up and told him no one deserves to get beat with belts in the face just because they have a family member with anger/ bipolar issues. Why are autistics like this? Other cousellor a few years ago my parents made me see he told me it was not right I only brought it up with this new one because he asked if I liked hanging out with a certain family member. Why I even had to bring the abuse up because when I told him no I do not like hanging out with this family member he kept questioning me why. He also keeps trying to get me to join age inapropriate groups to make friends. If I'm 17 I do not see why I should join a group where everyone in it is 30 to 50 year olds.

That was a terrible, false, and totally unprofessional comment.

Must you see this particular counselor?
Thanks for this!

Can you report him to his supervisor or the board he's licensed by?

Also, can you fire him and find a new therapist? I don't know about the autism part of this question, but this therapist should not be seeing any patients if that is his response to someone being abused.

This therapist sounds awful. So wrong on every level. I wouldn’t generalize about people with ASD being rude though. It’s not the case at all.

Saying that, please never see this therapist again.
Thanks for this!

The counselor who told you that they have autism is now the same counselor trying to get you into age inappropriate groups?
What precisely leads you into counseling? It's an at will endeavor. Meaning it's voluntary.

I'm confused. You said that the counselor diagnosed you with autism, then that "you don't know if autism makes him rude"...?

Aside from that part, I totally agree with everyone else that you need to report him and find a new therapist. Unfortunately mental health professionals treat teenagers this way a lot, in terms of being overbearing and pushy. It's a little bit different, but when I was 16 I informed a psychiatrist that my mother has AIDS and he acted as if I was making that up because it wasn't in my file. It felt terrible to be treated like a criminal /liar because of my age.

I think mental illness and trauma is just now starting to be understood better, but people (professionals included) are more reluctant to accept these issues in children and teenagers, instead of just writing it off as a discipline problem. It's really unfortunate.

I don’t think op was diagnosed with autism. I think this counselor says he himself has autism. That’s how I’ve read it

Um...gee. I'm sure sorry you were told that by your counselor but please don't label all those on the Spectrum as being rude. Generalizing a whole group of people because of one experience isn't the way to go about things.

I find it troubling that a therapist blamed you for the abuse.

Could you be misinterpreting what he said? Could he have said something along the lines of "they hit you and then asked you if you deserved it." Sometimes therapists say things in a confusing way.

If you feel that he WAS blaming you, then quit seeing him and report him.

Clearly, some people should not be therapists.
