So, I renewed my lease in December. There was a small pro-rated amount I had to pay because my lease was only through the 20th. The woman who handled my lease renewal told me the remainder due at the time of signing was $11.61, and I could pay that when I paid my January rent.

On December 29th, I emailed the property manager and asked her if she could verify the total amount due, because the online billing system did not show my water bill (managed by the property) or the remainder of the pro-rated amount. Her response to me was just to pay whatever was on the bill I received in the mail. This was a different employee than the one who handled my lease renewal. The thing is, the bill I got in the mail was incorrect. It had my old rental amount instead of the one that was on the new lease, and it did not have the pro-rated remainder on it.

So I went into the online system, took the amount that was due for the water utility from the bill, the pro-rated amount the first employee had given me that I have verified in writing in email as $11.61, and the new rental amount per my lease and paid that in total.

Two days ago I got a note on my door saying I still owed 39 cents because the pro-rated amount was $12 and not $11.61.

And I'm not having it.

Not only did I give them the chance to tell me what the pro-rated amount was a second time, I have in writing from the first employee that the amount was $11.61. She is a representative of their company. You can't sell something one day for one price then decide the next day that something you already sold is worth more so call the customer up and expect them to actually send you a check for more money. Nope. I am fairly certain that a judge would see my side of this.

I get that it's only 39 cents, but I'm super tired of this property manager dicking me around, which they do all the time. They tell me a maintenance worker is coming over and so I stay at home waiting and the worker never shows, and when I call them they say "oh they cancelled" and yet they didn't bother to call and tell me that the person called and cancelled so that I can go about my day. And they've done that numerous times.

I actually gave them a chance to double-check the amount and I was blown off.

What's to stop them from deciding next month that they did the math wrong again and saying I owe them another $1? Nothing.

I called them and complained, and they said, oh don't worry about it just add the 39 cents to your February rent. And I said, um, no, I'm not paying that 39 cents. You quoted me the pro-rated amount and I paid it. I'm pretty sure that's a done deal. Especially since I have it in writing.

I'm pretty livid. I don't want to get in a stink over 39 cents but I feel I'm being gouged already on rent, in a way, PLUS they piss me off regularly when it comes to these entry issues.

I really don't want to go to court over 39 cents but I'm trying to think if there's any authority I can report this to so as to put a stop to it.

Oh I hear you. We are also renters. Unfortunately there is no one to complain to. That’s the price we pay for renting.

We live in a very expensive area, it’s the most expensive city in our state, and it’s expensive rent! You’d think we’d have peace of mind. Nope. we deal with BS all the time. Wrong amount, wrong lease renewal, broken promises. We constantly have issues with management. One time I attempted to complain to headquarters who manage property and I was told they can’t do anything and I should just talk to management. It’s daily headache. No advice here. Just understanding

If you have pro rated amount in written, don’t pay freaking 39 cents!!!!

Yeah, I mean, if I didn't have SO many other problems with them, I'd just pay it, but this is really the last straw. They pull so much borderline crap...I can't even.

I've escalated the issue to the head manager of the property. I will escalate it as far as I can within the company. I don't want too much trouble over 39 cents, so I may pay it just to cover my *** while I take it to the Fair Housing Authority or someone who cares.
