This thread will be a place to post articles about proper social behavior or to talk about what you have learned about it. Here's the first article:

This is a great idea! My mother had no idea of manners - she was just a bully. So i just learned to avoid the swat - thats not exactly the same as polite manners! Meeting and greeting people often resulted in said swats. "Say thank you! (Swat!)" I keep perusing etiquette books, but they dont teach the baby basics.

Trav, your post reminded me of Robert Fulghm's book "Everything I Needed to Know I learned in Kindergarten." I think this still applies.

1. Share everything.

2. Play fair.

3. Don't hit people.

4. Put things back where you found them.

5. CLEAN UP YOUR OWN MESS.

6. Don't take things that aren't yours.

7. Say you're SORRY when you HURT somebody.

8. Wash your hands before you eat.

9. Flush.

10. Warm cookies and cold milk are good for you.

11. Live a balanced life - learn some and drink some and draw some and paint some and sing and dance and play and work everyday some.

12. Take a nap every afternoon.

13. When you go out into the world, watch out for traffic, hold hands, and stick together.

14. Be aware of wonder. Remember the little seed in the Styrofoam cup: The roots go down and the plant goes up and nobody really knows how or why, but we are all like that.

15. Goldfish and hamster and white mice and even the little seed in the Styrofoam cup - they all die. So do we.

16. And then remember the ****-and-Jane books and the first word you learned - the biggest word of all - LOOK!

The 6th. Don’t take things that aren’t yours must come today as very old-fashioned since the contrary is ramping here and there as if there wouldn’t be a tomorrow.

I just stumbled across an article I thought fit with this thread.

Quote:
Harriet’s message is a powerful one: Choose kindness as often as possible. You never know when your harsh words will fall on the ears of a sensitive person and deeply hurt them. Showing empathy and compassion is more powerful than being judgemental and catty. Thank you Harriet!

Oh, god! What incredible unfriendly and superficial these two persons were with Harriet.
It recalls me a scene from the movie green friend tomatoes.
I’m saying by memory so maybe I mistake something. When the character played by Katy Bates was going out of the malls and she crosses past with two young, pretty girls (the gold American girls) and they pressed her to put her shopping items in the car and leave her parking lot so they could use it. They did it in such dirty manners that she even was insult because of her physical appearance and age (if I’m not wrong). She attacked them back crashing her car into theirs while saying something like: Yeah, I’m older and my car is also bigger and with an insurance covers everything.

The interesting thing is that she realised how she couldn’t give less for the girls’ rude comments while in the past, because of different circumstances she would have felt pretty hurt by these comments.
Both poles Harriet was referring in her message, experienced by the same person.

Conclusion: Reacting to each rude behaviour people may have is a waste of time but from time to time it’s not so bad to hit the table once and place someone in their place.

"I'm older and i have more insurance!" It was like something Steve McQueen would say. It shocked and delighted everyone.

Growing up, I was taught: what happens in the family stays in the family... and you don't wash your dirty laundry in public. The lesson stuck. There were also rules regarding who gets introduced to who first and stuff like that. But I forgot all of that a long time ago.

I was raised with the not airing your dirty laundry too, plus if you can’t say something nice then say nothing at all. Also you made your bed, so lay in it, meaning shut up and don’t complain. As for driving the speed limit, I’m not gonna stop doing that, cause it does save lives!

I'm gonna say this without knowing all the other cultures out there and their etiquette.
I'll just speak to what I have observed in this society in the USA. Many people here are extremely rude.
Everybody is in a rush. Most people here are just into money and material things. From the drug dealer who wants to make money but
doesn't care how many people he kills. To the corporate business man who steals and cheats his way to the top.
To all the corrupt politicians who , if they did the right thing , could solve many a problem. Etiquette ?
That book got thrown out the window many years ago.

I hear you.
I think Western cultural countries are pretty much alike you say. Everything goes very fast and we seem pretty much slaves of duties, make money to live a “supposed” marvellous life, full with all kinds of material things.

I’m gonna be very rude now, obviously exaggerate but sometimes when I use public places, the street included, I think there must be a bill to pay for those who goes here and there, eyes on their phones and don’t care about knocking down another pedestrian or a dog. This is so rude.

I know here we are talking about the way to speak and relate but I think good manners with things that are not said but done might also be included. For example, I have always taught how important is to care public places so much as your private ones. So, this is something I have ingrain.
I always carry bags to put the litter in when eating out or water and soap to clean my doggies’ pises.
If I drops something, I don’t have any problem to picked it up or do whatever to clean. I don’t care if there will be workers who are gonna clean later. I think we are all responsible to care.

I notice some people think that I’m exaggerate in that but it’s not a big problem for me or for anyone to be clean with your surrounding.
