Description: Psychodynamic therapy, also known as insight-oriented therapy, focuses on unconscious processes as they are manifested in a person’s present behavior. The goals of psychodynamic therapy are a client’s self-awareness and understanding of the influence of the past on present behavior. In its brief form, a psychodynamic approach enables the client to examine unresolved conflicts and symptoms that arise from past dysfunctional relationships and manifest themselves in the need and desire to abuse substances.

Positive aspects of the product (pros): Psychodynamic Therapy helps tyou to deal with past events that have been controlling you subconciously throughout your life.
Negative aspects of the product (cons): none that I have experienced

This is exactly the type of therapy I have been needing. The Insurance Companies and even most therapists are for the "quick fix". There are quite a few ins. Co.s that only allow 20 visits with a therapist. No one with BPD & MDD are going to be well after only 20 visits. I have finally found and am working with for the first time in 11 years of therapy a therapist trained in helping someone with BPD & MDD and willing to stay the distance with long term psychodynamic therapy THANK GOD!!!!!!

Positive aspects of the product (pros): This type of therapy can make the client feel very cared-for. Delves into the unconscious/semi-conscious reasons for one's thoughts and behaviors.
Negative aspects of the product (cons): While feeling very cared-for, the client can become infatuated with the therapist, believing he/she finds the client "special". This can lead to its own set of issues.

Once the client gets past the initial "getting to know you and your history" sessions, the intimacy of having a therapist probe into your most private and even your unaware thoughts can be intoxicating. I felt as if I were in an oasis apart from my life, and fell irreversibly in love with my therapist. It overwhelmed me, both in and outside of my sessions. I will be terminating soon, after about 8 years, and feel that I will miss her enormously. The pain is agonizing. I want to be her friend for life, but know that will not happen.

Positive aspects of the product (pros): Helps better understanding of the self
Negative aspects of the product (cons): I have been in insight-oriented therapy for nearly three years now and I still have not had any of my problems resolved

Every psychotherapist I have seen has been increasingly interested in my childhood and my relationship with my parents and sibling. I am increasingly frustrated in this therapy because I continue to make mistakes with lasting consequences and all my therapists have told me is that they don't believe that my problems can be resolved without a holistic understanding of myself. I eventually went to see a psychiatrist and a MFT trainee and in a few sessions they have done more for me than the psychologist in years' time.

Positive aspects of the product (pros): Somewhat helpful
Negative aspects of the product (cons): Didn't resolve my issues

It is nice to have professional support. I think it is very difficult to change the way one thinks. I never could get to the point of acceptance when it came to family and the past (i.e. feelings of family not making the right choices that effected me as a child and adult).

Positive aspects of the product (pros): Really digs deep and promotes better understanding
Negative aspects of the product (cons): Lots of questions about conflicted family junk, takes some time

Very helpful. Took things nice and slow. Asked good questions and came to good understandings. Patience is required.

Positive aspects of the product (pros): Very helpful for getting to know one's self and to better understand others. The relationship with one's therapist is the best/hardest aspect
Negative aspects of the product (cons): Can be time/money consuming

I was very slow starting and it took a nine year break and more life experience/time before I could use this type of therapy well. Although it often deals with one's childhood/past, I found it helpful to have had a longer "past" and more life experiences to get a really good perspective on my life.

Positive aspects of the product (pros): I had very little trust beforehand. It helped me with this.
Negative aspects of the product (cons): Not sure if any insurance will pay for it today.

I worked with 3 lovely feminist psychotherapists when I was in my 20's who helped me express my feelings, recognize my feelings. It was hard because I wanted to be better yesterday. Now I work with a therapist who is mainly supportive. I am adding insights also by working a 12 step recovery program for Adult children of alcoholics.

Positive aspects of the product (pros): This type of therapy can get at deeper issues and intra-personal conflicts which lead to problems in living or problem behaviors. It usually leads to a more complete and wholistic view of the self, and this can be very validating.
Negative aspects of the product (cons): This approach can take more sessions than CBT or other short-term therapies. It can be frustrating to gain insight and find yourself still doing the problem behaviors. Sessions are loosely structured, so it can seem random and be hard to "wrap up&quo

Psychodynamically oriented therapy has helped me work to overcome recurrent atypical depression. It's been very helpful for me to have a safe place to explore my thoughts and feelings. The therapist-patient relationship is a key component to this process, so a good match between the two is essential. I'd recommend this therapy for those who wish to go beyond looking at current thoughts, feelings, and behaviors to search for roots within themselves and their experiences.

Positive aspects of the product (pros):
Negative aspects of the product (cons):

This has been the only type of therapy that I've made progress with in treatment for DID/MPD. It's had a much more lasting effect and a greater understanding of my system.
