PROS:

Relieved depression quickly & effectively
|
CONS:
|
Caused some anxiety, low-back pain, shortness of breath
|

I have been taking desipramine (currently the cheap generic from Actavis) for depression intermittently since 2003, always returning to it after trying Wellbutrin, Lexapro, Prozac, Ludiomil, Remeron, Serzone, Zoloft, and Effexor. Desipramine is the only one that helped, although high doses caused shortness of breath, low-back pain, nightmares, stress, and anxiety. The key has been finding the correct dose, 5 mg. right now. An important discovery was that chocolate produces a synergistic effect with desipramine. Taking the drug in the evening right after a large serving of dark chocolate and 10 ounces of milk allows me to keep the dose, as well as prescription costs, low. It is not nearly as effective without chocolate during the day. But a problem is that, for me, the drug is addictive. Several times, increasing the dose made me more depressed but going down to a lower strength improved my mood, so finding the optimal one has been difficult. I am not complaining. My doctors have been reluctant to prescribe this antiquated medication, preferring to suggest the on-patent ones their drug reps are pushing, but I am so grateful for the positive change desipramine has made to my quality of life.

I frequently purchase prescribed drugs by using americantrustpills (seriously, this place sucks) free of danger. Sad to say I use to take tons of it so low price is pretty important for me.

Not too many side effects

Urinary incontinence, tiredness

Judging from my journals, this medication did not help my depression. I took it for a year. It did cause minor urinary incontinence which cleared up upon discontinuing drug.

helped my headaches

tiredness, insomnia, and twitches

I really hate this med! The dr prescribed it for headaches and I have to admit it helps, but I am so tired even on a low dose that I'd prefer the headaches. Also, both this and nortriptylin made my face twitch constantly on the left side. Very distracting! Mr dr said he never heard of this side effect, though, so perhaps it is unusual.

none for me

Made me feel crazy
|
|
This med was the very first anti-depressant I was put on when I first suffered with panic and anxiety attacks. This med drove me crazy. I was thinking really weird thoghts with this med. Doctor took me off then put me on a family related drug to this drug called imipramine and that did the same thing. Doctor didn't want to believe me so went off med and got new doctor.

added to anxiety level

I was given the generic name for norpramin which is desipramine. This med caused my anxiety level to go higher & higher. I felt like I was bouncing off the walls & couldn't sleep. This effect lasted so long that it ended up that I couldn't tolerate the mediation.

makes a good adjunct to a newer antidepressant

CONS:

too dangerous if you're suicidal

I read in a book by a psychiatrist (who should have known better) the exact amount of desipramine it takes to kill you. Every night thereafter, I had to stare at the bottle and fight that knowledge.
The dry mouth and constipation would make it nearly intolerable, but it was the only thing that kickstarted the Effexor and made it work again.
