I find that I am often amused and inspired by the words and thoughts of the very young and the very old.

Today, while I was attempting to not fall asleep during the quite boring company orientation for my new Nursing job, they introduced us to one of the oldest employees they have still working full time in the Pacific Northwest.

It was an 80 year old Nun!!

Now, this is a Catholic Foundation/Hospital and during orientation it was no surprise that their Mission Statement and Core Values reflected this Faith.

As a child of guilt ridden Roman Catholics on one side and strict, iron-fisted Baptists on another, I grew up quite confused when it came to religion and spirituality.

Now that I am an adult, I have found my faith and spirituality in Paganism; however, I still find myself being intrigued by a question that I find not too uncommon in society.

What is the difference between religion and spirituality???

Many times I have tried to define the difference within myself, and many times I have tried to assist others in this challenge as well.

After what I heard today....I will be confused no more....and I wanted to share this with others in hopes it can help them define the difference(s) as well.

So here stands this 80 year old Nun, dressed in an ankle length denim skirt and pink cardigan. She is speaking to us about diversity, spirituality, and religion and asks if any of us know the difference between the two. Now, I'm thinking "80 year old Nun...here comes some serious old school preaching from Sister Mary Ju-Ju Bee!!" And then she spoke...

She said quite simply, "If Humans were like computers, Spirituality would be hardwired. It would be built in and is that which allows us to embrace faith and live our lives to the fullest. Religion is the software that people would use. Not everyone will use the same software, but we all are hardwired for love, respect, and tolerance."

I was floored!! This was the answer that I have been looking for....and it made absolute sense to me. Hardwiring is intrinsic. It is built in. Software is what is uploaded and given to us along the way!!

Who would have thought that a Nun, born in the 1920's, back when computers took up whole buildings and were almost laughable in the eyes of technology, could teach me so much with one simple analysis rooted in a silicon society!!

Thank you Sister.
