I am starting a new (volunteer) position tomorrow. It's in an area of my interest and I am hoping to learn a bit there so that I might be hired in this area eventually. (I'm also applying to a graduate program in this area).

But I am nervous. I really like the woman I am working with (the director) so far but I feel a little intimidated by her. I want to make a good impression. I am going to work on trying to just be myself. This is an area that has been very hard for me in the past - I am usually trying to be all things to all people and mold myself into what I think others want or need of me. So I think it's going to feel a bit odd trying to remain in my "own skin" for the entire segment of time that I am there. It is an odd feeling to have to work hard at simply being true to who you are. Why is it so much easier for me to try and pretend I am the person I think the other one wants to see?
I will probably start saying the serenity prayer this evening and say it all the way through tomorrow, lol.

Any good thoughts and pocket riders would be awesome...

(((((Elana))))))

Every Human being wonders about their self worth and how to present themselves in the best way they can. You will be entering into an experience that is truely a learning experience about participating in an atmosphere where a certain activity is taking place. I don't know what the environment is, but whatever it is the most important thing people want to know is if you will learn the important how to's so that you can work independantly along a given guideline and also be a part of a team that is trying to provide some kind of service.

The person who will be training you will just be looking for someone who can understand the procedures she will be showing you and then follow them. No one is going to expect you to just jump into a job function and know exactly what the procedure is. Most of the time it is more about respecting the other people and how they just work as a team. So that is what you truely have to focus on and try not to worry about just people pleasing. Be pleasent and willing and conscentrate on the job at hand.

Elana, you going to be learning, that is what you have to remind yourself most of all, and every person you meet had to go through the same process. And the best way to be in a group of people is be respectful to others and try not to participate in whatever soap opera activities that may be presented. There always seems to be a little of that in any group of people that work together. The decision you make is about doing the job and also doing your best to listen and find ways to be respectful of others and remembering that you are there for the job itself.

I don't know exactly what your doing, but you ARE going to learn and there is nothing better than making every attempt to just learn. Everyone pretty much has their own presentation of a personality that meets the need of the working enviornment. That is all you need to do, focus on the job, and be respectful.

Good Luck,
We are always here to listen. If you run into some questions we can all do our best to offer our support.
