urban myth?
I've studied many different backgrounds to the date of December 25th. It was the date decided upon by the Roman catholic church in an attempt to counter an evil holiday being celebrated. There are many arguments about Christ not being born in their wintertime because of the verse about Shepherds watching their flocks by night. However, in that area, sheep are still herded there and though winters might be cold, not so cold that shepherds are not out watching their flocks.

There were calendars, but not our calendar (back in ancient times.) Of course, the months were called different names and the Jewish calendar had another month I think, which we make up for with the number of days and leap year and all that..

Many things that I have been learning through teaching of his word has not been what I knew growing up and yes it makes me wonder much when things get twisted and hidden I do wonder why.
From what I understand it is good that I want to learn more and question humans concept and compare it to his word. Is what I am learning. To know such a holiday was hidden in a pagon holiday why would I want to except it ? Just cuz others say so? Wondering. sorry if that upsets anyone but is where I am. |

Well, since there is no reliable proof that Jesus ever existed, the date of his birth (or conception) is not exactly high on my list of things to be concerned about.
Christmas has been a primitive pagan holiday since people started worshiping the sun, which was almost from the very beginning. When the days got short in winter, they were afraid the sun would go and never return, so they lit huge fires to encourage the sun and, sure enough, the days started getting longer again. This developed into the Solstice Celebration, featuring big feasts and revelry with bonfires and torches to bring light and help people get through the worst part of winter. The Roman Christians simply jumped in along the way and called it Christmas. It is good to examine these things and understand their foundations (which are often flimsy). |

There is MORE historical data that Jesus Christ lived than there is about Ceasar Agusta!!!! More documentation, including vast amounts of non Christian historian's accounts... than for other dignitaries that are acclaimed as having lived... more study of history and such would help with understanding the truth.

Well, Sky......if you know of any non-Christian historical "proofs" that Jesus was a real person--please share them.
I haven't heard of anything other than the mention in the works of Josephus that modern scholars see as an obvious later Christian addition to his work. Myself, I believe that Jesus DID exist and was a great prophet--but I can't claim there's any proof. It could also be that the stories of Jesus are gathered from the teachings and acts of several different Jewish prophets and were gradually melded into a story of one man. Whatever......it is true that his purported teachings are indeed wise and people SHOULD revere them. |

Why do I have to prove history? Read for yourself... the ancient historians THAT is what they used for proof then, and it's good enough for me now.
Why have you taken this thread from a topic of maybe Christ was conceived on what we celebrate as his birthday, to asking ME to prove that the historians wrote more of his life than of Caesar's??? Quit please.

Those are a bunch of names, not facts.
Give us a non-Christian historical mention (other than Josephus, which I already dealt with). |

Oh, I've read my history.
What I can see is you failing to cite anything to back your claims. |

Folks, I will once again kindly remind everyone that this is NOT the place to debate the existence of a particular religion, religious figure, etc.
Please, keep your posts positively faith- and spirit-oriented, or refrain from visiting this forum. Thank you. DocJohn
