So recently I've been trying to do meditation because I have a mind that's kind of hard to quiet down, and so I thought it would be something good to do before I go to bed at night. 2 nights ago, I tried meditating to a guided MP3 and it worked somewhat well. I noticed that I felt really physically good. I didn't have any real aches and some parts of my body, like my hands, I lost some feeling in and they felt like they were just...energy. I don't know how else to describe it. But anyway, even though I felt good physically, the mess in my mind was still going on and it really hindered me from fully enjoying the experience. So now I'm wondering...how do I take care of this? I like the way meditating made me feel, I want to try it again and go deeper next time, and I want to eventually just be able to lose myself in it. But I can't if I don't take care of the mind stuff. Is there anyone here EXPERIENCED in meditation who can maybe help this newbie out?
Keep in mind, I'm new to this and I'm also 17 so I would appreciate it greatly if someone could give me advice that's fairly easy to understand. Also: what's the deal with these things called binaural beats, and do they really work? Thank you. ![]() |

ShyPoetGirl glad you are finding relief from meditation. Some people think that meditation will make their thoughts go away, and it eventually does to some extent, but the first stage is discovering how many thoughts there are floating through your head.
The next step for me is to be aware of the mental state using meditation or mindfulness sometimes. I still slip back, but now I know what to do when that happens. THE PRACTICE step 1) I consciously breathe in and then in a relaxed manner allow the breath to escape, not forcing it out. This is the beginning. The next part is to keep following the breath AND to NOT follow the thoughts. I see these thoughts as temptors or tormentors, but I make a conscious decision to not grab on to those thoughts. If it helps I count one for the in breath and two for the out breath. I continue to ten and then start at one again. If I find myself counting 17, then I smile inside and start at one again. No judgement is the basis for practicing mindfulness or meditation. So try the breathing in addition to whatever helps you relax. You can do this sitting comfortably (a great way to wake up) or laying down (a great way to go to sleep) If you have specific questions beyond this feel free to reply or PM me. Yes to what CANDC posted. The goal of meditation is to "watch" (follow) your breathing, not your thoughts. The thoughts will always be there. The thoughts will never stop. With practice, you learn to just notice your thoughts without becoming enmeshed with them.

What you are experiencing is normal. Over all you are feeling quite good. Let your thoughts Guide you to where ever they take you. After all it is your Journey, and your guides will take you where you need to go.

Some say the guides work out of the emotional center. For me that is a more secure place than the mind, although some people refer to the mind and the heart center as one. Find a quiet place and life will bring you where you need to be.
