so uhh..this was a few weeks ago

i slept over at a friend's house..

and well, she reckons i sat up (still asleep) in a cold sweat speaking in tongue.

this isnt new though, last year another friend reckons i was mumbling in enochian in my spleep.

i know i sleep talk, that's a well known fact. ( hehehe ) im also extremely used to waking up in a sitting position dripping in sweat.

but i mean, this all seems pretty drastic?

right?

i posted this here because i thought someone could give me some insight on speaking in tongue etc..

It is my firm belief that when the apostles spoken in "tongues" after the baptistm of the Holy Spirit came upon them, the "tongues" they spoke were the existing languages of the day. They were given the knowledge of the languages in order to spread the Word of God.

I've been to churches that believe that "tongues" are a secret language given to people in order to praise God. I've listened to these "tongues" and to me, it sounds like the same sound repeated over and over. I've also seen people "overtaken by the Holy Spirit" and they pass out. To me, as a lay observer, it is nothing more than mass hysteria... or something the individual does so as not to be known as "not having the Holy Spirit."

I personally don't think you were "speaking in tongues" as interpreted by Charismatic Christians. oh come on... so i sleep talk!

I think one rarely makes sense talking in one's sleep :-) I know my roommate sat up once looking for her "chain" when I was in college :-) and last Spring I was in a stressful week-long school meeting in a hotel with a before-then-unknown fellow student roommate and she said I was mumbling in my sleep about Venezuela, which was the topic I was stressed about :-) I can imagine that someone would mumble/talk in their sleep and not make a lot of "sense" to the hearers. I don't know that I would decide that was speaking in tongues, one reason being there's not a whole lot of people around to hear it (almost nil chance of getting an "interpreter"?) so there's no point. God rarely :-) does nonsensical things, I think. Sweating and mumbling in your sleep lead me to believe you're having a nightmare-type struggle rather than trying to "bless" your hearers :-)

I agree that according to my understanding of the gift of tongues is that it is speaking in actual languages known to people on the earth. I think that it would have some useful purpose. Such as if you are able to talk to and/or understand someone who doesn't speak your language, or to read or translate something written in another language. Even learning another language relatively easily could involve the gift of tongues.

I have heard people say some interesting things and/or make interesting noises in their sleep though. I don't think it's the same thing, in most cases.

I do something similar. I can sit up and talk to people, answer them...but I am still asleep! I told my family to make sure I was awake before talking to me! LOL! I guess our minds are just always working.

yeah dore, i can agree with the statement our minds are always working... even in dream states... huh? , hadnt given it enough thought... i mean if it shut down, we're in trouble!

after my mom had the life changing car wreck, us kids went to stay at a friend of the familys' .... i got out of bed one night (i was about 8 or 9), took off all my clothes, and went to watch tv with the family.... i remember it, but, it was totally like someone else doing it...

guess thats not 'talking' .. or maybe i did? ... the people ive talked to about it said i acted normal about it all, just that i didnt seem to be aware i was naked, lol....
