I was looking at various sites to see what spiritual support is and when it might be helpful and came across this nice list from the Greater Baltimore Medical Center's Spiritual Support Center:

Great way to begin the "New" Spiritual support forum.
The list has everything that I have come to the this forum for at one time or another. ![]() Thank you to everyone here and welcome to those who are new and looking for spiritual support. Psychcentral is a wonderful site, and support can be found in any of the forums in this large, diverse "community". Take care Peace everyone..... |

Thanks Perna
![]() Yup - that list says it all for me too. It's a great list. It feeds the soul to have a place to go where you know people will understand. If they don't, they will listen with open ears and try to understand. It promotes a sense of renewal and strength to either face the obstacles or truly savor the joy of connecting with others. That is what I call a "Sanctuary." It also brings us together as an internet "family" - an extended family to support us. As far as I'm concerned, I believe it makes our prayers for each other and those who request prayers that much stronger. Our prayers are stronger because we put more heart into our prayers. Thank you ((everyone)) for making a concerted effort at creating a true Sanctuary for Spiritual Support. ![]() |

I think one place it's easy to get confused with spiritual support is that it's about the person posting, asking for support, not about the person responding. So, any "I believe x, y, or z" is instantly off-topic in a sense because it's not about supporting the person who posted.
I was a little confused researching spiritual support pages because they all say "we will bring in a minister of your faith. . ." so "naturally" move into one's religion. I didn't see how it would be possible to separate spiritual and religion but now I see that it's a response to the original person and their needs, not a, well-here's-what-I-believe, why don't you use that, reaction. If one's beliefs are different or one doesn't know what one believes, it's the searching that is supported, the "desire," not the belief system itself. Bringing religion into it would be like my wanting to bring my treatment for anxiety into someone else's depression discussion. The anxiety and depression are not what are important, it's the struggle with mental illness issues and the joint, human familiarity with that that matters.
