Caleb wanted to go outside about 4 am. He did, briefly. We went to sleep (he and I) after, but then his barfing woke me at 8am. Then I realized that one eye was swollen nearly shut. Caleb. I put some cold compresses on it, and then I saw a swelling under his other eye too. So then I figured he must have happened on a wasp nest, though I hadn't heard him yelp or anything. I did a few minutes of cold compresses and that's about it. (He's feeling fine and wanted to play with the rag instead.) He does "rub" his eyes and face alot, like to clean it. Caleb.

I noticed the swelling getting worse and called the vet for approval of 25 mg of diphenhydramine (benedryl item.) The vet said 50 mg and again in 6 hours. But I only gave him 25mg to see how it affects him. (It used to zonk and scare Figaro.)

The swelling has increased from above the one eye to also below it now. If he doesn't fall asleep from the 25 mg soon, I think I'll give him another 25 mg. (It's only been an hour since the original small dose.)

Please consider praying for my Caleb. He's being such a good service dog for me. Caleb. Thanks.

Thank you all. I gave him the second low dose after 3 hours...and he and I both had a good long nap Caleb. The swelling is...changing... Caleb. It hasn't increased on the one side, but the fluid has dropped to his jowl. (Really funny looking.) And the other eye swoll up worse, but now is subsiding also. I will give him another dose of med in a little while so he can have a good sleep. It must hurt because he won't allow me to touch it now, whereas when it was fully swollen, he leaned into the frozen cloths I laid across his face. (He's a good dog. Caleb. ) Should he become worse during the night, there is a local 24 hour pet hospital I can take him to.

Thank you so much for your prayers. God knows Caleb is really all I own that is of any importance. Caleb.

((( Sky ))) and ((( Caleb )))

I don't normally visit this forum, but when I saw Caleb's name...I had to see if he was okay. I'm sorry he's hurting (I know that hurts Caleb's mom, too!) and I hope he feels better soon!

((Sky))

My dog isn't a service dog, but she's my constant companion and I don't know what I'd do without her. I also know how much it hurts me when she's sick or in pain. Your Caleb is most definitely in my prayers, and I hope he recovers from whatever he got into.

Rest well, and I hope you both wake up with happy and unswollen faces.

Nothing wrong with giving him a advil for the inflamation and pain.. I have done it with many of the animals in my care for years,,,but don't make a habit of it..bad for the liver..

Thank you all. Caleb. His swelling is all but gone now, and he's almost totally active again. (I can't play fetch because he still isn't seeing everything, plus it's terribly muggy out...t storms on horizon.)

Sky,

Caleb is such a great "puppy". I will be glad to pray for you and Dude!

My littlest "puppy" in my brood here, weighs about 14 pounds. She was dumped off here about five years ago. My husband spotted out front, and brought my attention to her. Her neck was all swollen disfiguring her profile. I thought to myself -- what an ugly dog (not knowing that she had a temporary problem). We took her to the vet, and he said he thought she had been stung by something, and gave her a shot. The swelling was gone, I think in about a day, revealing a very pretty profile.

She has been such a wonderful "puppy". She knows exactly where my feet hurt, and massages the area with her warm, wet tongue. She has been such a blessing.

Haven't been here for several days & then saw your post about caleb.....knew something must have happened.

My heart goes out to caleb & to you as I know that every pain they have hurts us also....am going through a rough time with my doggies right now also.

It is good that he didn't have a horroble allergic reaction beyond the swelling.....that was bad enough......glad the vet could give you the med to help with the swelling reaction & dogs somehow get through these things better than it seems they would.

Glad to hear the good report.....my prayers would have been with him if I had read this earlier....but will pray that he has learned not to stick his head into a wasps nest again.....or whatever it was that got to him.

((((((((caleb & sky)))))))),
Debbie
