hi. i have been doing some research on whether schizoaffective has remained in DSM V. apparently it has remained, with a few changes that i do not understand.

any info is greatly appreciated.

i have had it all my life along with OCD. my meds keep the paranoia under reasonable control.

Dr. Inocalla would never take me off my meds (i hope) since w/o them i would be more of a mess than i am now! at least i don't think she would.

The DSM is used primarily for diagnosing. And there is a continuum for all diagnoses.
Your doctor will not be required to change your medications. She is your doctor and knows you and knows what is helpful to you

Talk to her about your worry, and find out what's what. It will be relieving, I think!

There is no reason they would take you off your meds. Your symptoms stay the same and are treated the same regardless of what the term is that you are DXed with.
Thanks for this!

saw dr. inocalla today. she kept my meds exactly the same like she always does. she said if she had to she could change my diagnosis to either paranoid schizophrenia, or bipolar with psychotic features. she said schizoaffective really describes me the best.

Yeah, when you are on meds that are working for you, it is not wise to change.. Cause some meds work for some, but don't for others.. I found that out.. I took depakote for a while.. Which is a mood stabilizer.. I really had a hard time functioning with that.. Than I took lithium, which is also another mood stabilizer as far as I know.. That made me really dizzy for some reason.. Zyprexa works for me, and I am schizoaffective.. I been on it for years.. I have noticed that it gives you a flat feeling like people describe.. But if you are emotional anyway, that works out.. Or spiritual..

My pdoc does not like to talk about dx's. He thinks it limits me--puts me in a peg hole. He has confirmed that I'm schizoaffective but also have a lot in common with Depression with psychotic features. He said each person is different and has various symptoms that may fall into various categories--the DSM V is not an all inclusive bible (except for the insurance companies).
