i have a lot of people stereotype me for my race and the way i dress. mostly that stuff.

example is i had told this past therapist i dont get much sleep and she said "why? partying too much?". that was the second day i saw her.

im thinking 'wow'. wow. cause not only do i not party i dont know 1 single person my age. and havent for a few years.

im not gonna put down everything but ....yea.

Some people need to learn to think before they open their mouths.... >.>

Really, this is their problem and not your problem. If someone is steriotyping you, then they are not overly bright. Everyone deserves their own chance to show who they are and judged by assumptions of other's behaviors.

And anyone judging you off race is just a prejudiced ***.

Oh, I've had no delusion that racism is very alive and well in this country. I have known way too many racist people.

a therapist called me deluded once i said someone called me the N word.

anyway the racial part of stereotyping i hate is just that people auto assume im ghetto. and the stereotyping part if the way i dress is people think im a trouble maker because what i wear.

Yeah, it's stupid to judge people on clothes and race. Last night I was watching a thing about the West Memphis 3 and how a huge part of the case against those guys was wearing black nail polish and black clothes.... >.>

And how can a T think you're delusional for someone calling you that?? That's ridiculous. It's just as bad to go blind to intollerance as it is to participate in it.

i used to get stereotyped for being overweight too. i was overweight for 2 years of my life. i was always skinny before and i am. so it was like putting on a fat suit. people looked at me funny sometimes and even with disgust. but the weird part to me was that most people didnt look at me at all. they didnt give me the time of day. some people even looked over me.

it made me have more sympathy for those that are overweight.

people watch me all the time now. good or bad they do.

I think we all stereotype people. It's just what the human mind does. It sorts things into categories and ascribes characteristics based on categories. The answer is (I hope) to be aware that this is a trap that we can fall into and try to keep our minds open. When you become aware, it's surprising how often we do it.

An example from just yesterday: I was driving away from work, and I noticed an older white man (late 60's?) walking his dog. He had a very upright bearing and what I could see of his hair was very short. He was wearing a jacket with a large American flag sewn across the back and a baseball cap made of some kind of camophlage material.

My first thought was, "I wouldn't want to be friends with that man." I judged him that swiftly. Then I started trying to unpack my assumptions and conclusions to see what they say about me and my mental processes.

Of course, clothing is a bit different from other more fixed things, but you should try it sometime. See if you don't put people into categories based on weight, age, gender, race, etc. It can be really subtle, and you may not notice you're doing it at first.

Having said that, I think your therapist's question was a dumb one, but we all say dumb things at times.

Yeah there is a lot of prejudice for being overweight. It's dumb. Glad you were able to lose the weight though because it is healthier. I used to be pretty small but I gained a lot of weight over the years. I lost like 30 lbs this year which is good, but I'm still needing to lose some.

I don't think we stereotype out of ignorance. IMO we stereotype, because it's more efficient to use what we've already learned about the world in the past and apply it to this situation than to approach every new situation as if we don't know anything. The problem is that sometimes we make mistakes when we act as if our assumptions are the truth instead of just a working of model of the world that's full of inaccuracies that will trip us up if we're not careful.

I don't know. When I meet a new person, I think nothing of them until they speak or their action. But I try very hard on this on a concious level. And I do it because I grew up with such judgemental people and bullies and to this day I am surrounded by it. So I try very hard at first glance not to judge.
