A very close friend of mine has a family history of schizophrenia. Her mother had it, and her half-brother was diagnosed with it a few years ago.

Consequentially, she is very concerned that she herself will develop it as well. As far as I can tell I dont think she is showing any of the early warning signs.

We've talked about it. It's usually her that brings it up. She's 24, and she and I are both aware that the first psychotic break can happen in your twenties. I really want to be there for her in the event that she does develop this terrifying disease.

I want to tell her that it might be a good idea to start seeing a shrink, or at least get on a list, that way she'll be covered. It can take years to get in to see a doctor. I dont want to see her slip through the cracks. I dont want to push to hard, but I dont want to let it slide either. I can tell that this really scares her -- I dont blame her. I want her to be as prepared as she can be.

What are your suggestions? Is there anything I can do right now that will be helpful for her?

Why does your friend fear that she might be developing this as well? - does the fear have more to do with her family history verses real proof (facts) from her real life?

I think it has more to do with her family history. She has made good decisions in her life, like avoiding drugs. Her mom and brother both had a history with hard drugs, I've heard that using drugs makes you more susceptible to developing it.

In that case.... I would tell her to continue on with her life as usual and to not worry about some thing that may NEVER be. Why concern herself with plain old DNA when she might just be spared this life style of suffering & pain.... most of our inner fears never take place.
