I've had to up my dose of risperdal recently. I'm having ravenous hunger. Anybody else on it and suggestions on what I can do to decrease it?

Hope everyone is well.

Unfortunately I don't have anything positive to say I gained 10 pounds over two months on 2mg of risperidone...I switched to abilify and my weight stabilized. I once ate two stale cupcakes because I felt I needed them it was really bad.

i ate a a bit more yes but had more lactation issues.

the thing with antipsychotics like @sometimes said is that u dont just eat a lot - what u eat doesnt make sense. like stale cupcakes. i remember eating stuff i never ate before and would not eat after coming off them. like pumpkin & apple spice flavored salt chips. wtf??? yeaaa. ...ate the whole bag in 1 sitting...

Some people do....from what I've heard Geodon is the best. I haven't tried it though because the abilify works for me.

What sucks is I just saw my pdoc. Geodon made me get that askansia really bad. But...maybe it will work if I take bensitropine with it.

I'm not spelling those right, lol sorry.

All antipsychotics can potentially cause weight gain. It's like tardive dyskinesia... the risk is always there.

Risperdal and abilify were weight neutral for me though. Seroquel made me gain weight like crazy.

Yeah I gained 50 lbs on seroquel. It was slowly coming off but now I'm gaining it back with risperdal. So frustrating!!

I guess just try having healthy snacks around, but I don't know if that would work. For me on Seroquel/quetiapine it HAD to be sugary carbs I'd eat my apple or whatever begrudgingly and then go and scoff a load of junk food too. The hunger was insatiable. Even if my stomach was so full, it was hurting! It's only now that I've reduced the dose that I'm back to turning down food cos I'm full. I was never full on the higher dose!!

And they say "just eat less and do more"!!! Grrrrrr!

That's weird because I know it causes weight gain and increased appetite but ever since I started risperdal a week ago my appetite has decreased. Guess it affects everyone differently.

For me when I was on a higher dose of risperdal I gained a lot of weight, but it was definitely because I was craving a lot of fatty things.

I was only able to loose the weight after I had the dose lowered.

Yeah its since I increased the dose. Thanks willow, you understand... Its so freakin hard but I will say the hunger isn't as bad as it was on seroquel.

Idk, what I'm gonna do. I'm really confused right now and paranoid. I don't even have my kindle right now (that's how I get online) bc there is something I'm really obsessed with and I get REALLY upset about it, so I gave my kindle to my sister. I'm using my sons tablet right now but he doesn't like me to use it much. He's a teenager...

I hope I figure it out on what I should do regarding my meds. I'm so afraid of the akathisia. I've gotten that before.

Thanks everyone for your responses.

I'm on Abilify/aripiprazole and, when I was on just that in the past, I think I gained a few pounds, but nothing major. Now I'm on it with Seroquel/quetiapine. Even though the dose has been lowered and I feel less hungry, I haven't lost any weight But then I am quite depressed and doing less so maybe that's it?!

I've had akathisia before on Abilify, but it was dose-dependent - 6-8mg for me. This time I jumped straight in at 10mg and avoided it, thankfully because it's completely miserable. I've never had a pdoc give me anything for it though, mainly because she didn't believe me (thankfully I no longer see that useless woman anymore!)

I wish you all the best passionskyy

I started gaining weight with my meds so I joined a gym, but I sometimes feel like i'm starving even if I eat more than enough for the day. I drink fluids when I'm hungry, that helps a little.
