I remember when my mom first found out about my delusions, she basically said something like "That sounds like something out of Doctor Who," and "That's just like the movie Donnie Darko." And she was right. I didn't even consciously realize it. With some movies/shows, I did have delusions of reference (like feeling like it was meant for me) but I never made the connection between those particular ones, though now it's obvious. Some of my hallucinations seem to be directly taken from movies...

It just seems that sometimes my brain plagiarizes works of fiction (or maybe even non-fiction?) and they become part of my psychosis without me even realizing. Does this ever happen to you?

I should also say that it has gotten to the point that my mom doesn't want me watching horror movies or "mindf**k" movies anymore (for reference, I am only 17, but I am a horror movie junkie.)

We used to love horror movies but now cant let our daughter watch them with us anymore because she hallucinates characters from them. So, yea. It happens.

I don't have that, but I know it does happen. You know there are those old jokes like "so-and-so thought she was Cleopatra" or a dead president, etc. There's usually such a character in most movies about people with mental illness. I'm guessing it's a similar concept, and either you connect something fictional or not to yourself somehow.

At my last job we had a patient who had patient with schizophrenia who came in a few times. He had the same name as both a famous political speach writer and also a well known lawyer, (2 different people with the same name as himself, first and last, but obviously a very common first and last name in general.) He believed he was both of those people. He would talk about his new book on politics or a court case he had been involved in, but he was just a regular guy and not either one of them. But, at first we were confused that such an important guy was coming to our clinic, so we looked it up. That's how we figured it out.

I have a lot of hallucinations and delusions that are horror related and some are similar to particular movies like The Ring. I don't watch horror movies anymore since they are just to similar to what I experience and it creeps me out.

I love horror movies. I hate it when I have problems and people say it's because I watch horror movies. They just want a simple fix and don't understand. My mind at all.

Yeah , delusions have alot of cultural references. And its not unusual that unrelated people have the exact same delusion. Donnie Darko has many themes , some say its an eccentric movie , that's just odd and quirky , and some say its a tale of mental illness in a young man. It's a bit of both i'd say. I really liked that movie though. Truman Show and The Matrix are 2 other movies that people with delusions reference. They really are just entertainment and if you can get your delusions under control you can appreciate them for what they are , a cracking good story. Some of christopher nolans movies , carry themes of mental illness too.

So yes this has happened to me.

Have you ever heard of Derren Brown? He's a British mentalist/magician who does shows where he basically messes with people's lives on a huge scale, setting people up and tricking them in the most elaborate way, with hypnosis, special effects, getting all their family and friends in on it, etc... a huge production...

Well, I am a huge fan of his, but sometimes I get paranoid thoughts that I've signed a contract with him and that all my mental health problems and my strange experiences are his creation, him trying to make me go crazy for TV... fortunately it's never lasted long enough to reach full delusional status, but I wouldn't be surprised if other people have had delusions about him.

(same goes for Improv Everywhere, a group of hundreds of volunteers that do "missions", which are like the nicer versions of pranks, on random strangers. Like getting a hundreds of people to freeze at the same time in Grand Central Station.)

No horror, thank god! But religious themed some times, either God or the Devil are after me. I also get the Truman Show feeling and funny thing is, my delusion came before the movie so when I saw the movie it flipped me out a different way

I know that. I'm saying that sometimes I get paranoid that he's pulling one of his "tricks" on me and that everyone is in on it. Similar to the Truman Show thing.

Ok i understand now. I thought it may help you that even though his show may come across as supernatural-esq . Derren is basically a rationalist. I know that knowing that something is not true or real is not good enough to stop delusions. Its a while since i was delusional and sometimes i forget

It's actually funny, because when I was younger, I had delusions and hallucinations centered around the supernatural (I saw ghosts, angels, believed in witchcraft and fairies, sometimes thought I was possessed or had powers, etc.) but at some point I grew out of that because I decided that I no longer believed in the supernatural. Now my delusions and hallucinations are more science fiction and philosophy based. I just can't win.

I watch the series "star gate", there was an episode that was kind of like the movie "ground hog" day. I think I watched it like a week ago. Anyway I had this weird dream last night where things kept repeating themselves and the only way to stop it was to do a series of actions in the correct order and we kept forgetting things or kept messing up the order. Vivid dreams mess with me outside of the dream state . I woke up hearing a vibrational hum , its all I could hear for an hour or so, and I couldn't help thinking that it was some kind of mind control device. I kept having to mentally slap myself that I was being irrational and that I need to go back to sleep. Its like your dreams subconscious invade your reality.
