Are compulsions and impulses a symptom or consequence of schizophrenia? I used to have this urge to confess to some things that bothered me to the point where they would haunt me even in my sleep in some ways. It literally ate me from my inside. After I did confess to these things to my family it didn't go over too well(my family is not really that great as well) and it deeply traumatized me. Now I have intrusive thoughts, inability to enjoy things I used to, fatigue, severe panic attacks etc.

I get these urges from time to time. And as I have a "form" of anxiety sometimes think that if I confess to some things to my family my anxiety would go away but I know how it turned out the last time I tried.

Is this a consequence of schizophrenia or something else? I also have OCD and I have rituals when I go to bathroom and washing my hands and other daily activities etc. Is this schizophrenia or ocd?

Honestly it sounds more like OCD...the closest thing I came to a compulsion was having the same delusion over and over till it became almost a fixed belief...what makes this inherently different is it had no basis in reality...anyway check this out...

OCD or Schizophrenia? | Ask the Therapist

Apparently it's common for people with OCD to think they have sz albeit the two can certainly be comorbid.

So just to give you an example of a delusion...for example you might believe that you can save the world from an impending invasion of dragons by doing certain things or that you can stop the voices by doing certain things for example putting all your computers into sleep mode. Rationally you might ask how would putting your computers into sleep mode do anything? Yeah that's exactly it ...it wouldn't but what you're thinking actually offers a potential solution that could in some circumstances work and that's why I think it's inherently different. If you want to feel more reassured you should ask your doctor.

I agree with Sometimes.

I don't have an OCD dx. I have bipolar with generalized anxiety disorder, but I have what I call "thought loops." They are generally things that cause me a lot of anxiety and I have to resolve them in order to move forward. I just get stuck. Often they come along with impulsive or compulsive actions. It's not ritualized at all, but often requires I do research online. The thought loops are not completely irrational at times, but often are over reactions. But clearing them from my mind and resisting the impulses to research is really hard.

Also, I have intrusive thoughts regularly. They are usually violent and not like my usual personality at all.

Sounds exactly like my situation. But I thought that was OCD? I think you have to believe it to be a delusion. But to be honest I don't think there's much of a different unless it's because of that "magical thinking" in schizotypal which is 50/50.

Edit: "believe" ok never mind.

Yeah for schizotypal you get delusions but don't have the same fixed nature as in sz/psychosis...so someone tells you it's not true and gives you proof you probably think yeah that's right but with sz you could tell me dragons don't exist and I would just ignore that reality and suggest that you are in fact in on it with the dragons. No proof of dragons? Well there's no proof they don't exist either. When we look at ancient paintings of emperors text we assume they existed why not dragons they are represented in numerous cultures historically plus I KNOW THEY EXIST because they've been talking to me remotely through ugh a telepathic connection. OCD is more like I hit a bump in the road and I can't get over the fact that I might have just run over someone..you know it's something that could have actually happened but could be unlikely while the delusions are so unlikely as to be considered impossible.
