I'm curious about hallucinations, how many and what types people experience. My own are olfactory, auditory, tactile, and taste.
I smell flowers constantly, even outside in the dead of winter. I taste sweet fruit. I hear voices (the furnace talks to me) and I'm often touched on the shoulder. Last edited by RRex; Feb 20, 2014 at 05:06 PM. |

Mine are mostly visual and auditory. Mumbled voices, calling voices, people in shadows, stuff like that. I also have some olfactory (smell) hallucinations, usually unpleasant things like feces. Never had a taste hallucination. Overall,I don't hallcuinate that much.

I have visual, auditory, and tactile officially. There was one time where I saw one of my people smoking and I smelled it too, but that may have been because my neighbors at the time were heavy smokers. Also, I don't know if this counts, but I used to be convinced that my food was poisoned and thought I could taste something "off" about it.
Visuals include full-on visions, distortions, people, and demons. Auditory includes voices, sounds of movement, and breathing. Mostly second-person voices, a lot of third person ones. No first-person ones (audible thoughts). Occasional command voices. Wow, someone should make a quiz about that. Tactile includes feeling things crawling on me, bites, hair pulling, and once a bad choking experience.

Oh, you didn't add a choice for somatic hallucinations! I get those a LOT. I feel like I have implants in me and sometimes feel them "working" (ticking, warming up, causing pain, etc.) When my voices first started there was a girl I saw who I thought was trying to torture me. There was one time where I thought she had put rats in my stomach. It was really uncomfortable and painful. Sometimes I feel like I'm dead or dying.
In fact, there are many more senses than the traditional 5. I wonder if people get hallucinations with their sense of time? Or balance and acceleration? Or proprioception? Or does that fall under somatic? I also wonder because there is a significant chance that I have some sort of seizure disorder (temporal lobe epilepsy?) that we never tested for, and if I recall correctly, some hallucinations correspond more strongly to that (like panoramic visions, which I get.)

I also forgot that I do have visual hallucinations. I see smoke around lights, especially ceiling lights. |

Does anyone else have panoramic visions (visual hallucinations that fill your visual field)? I heard that it's more associated with seizures, but I recently found out my grandmother gets them too, so I don't know.

I' m totally unclear on the difference between tactile hallucinations and somatic...they both sound like feeling things to me so I'm not sure what I had. Only one for taste. A handful for smell although those were the last to go and a similar number of visuals that I know about...there are some things that were just odd and the visuals were basically so realistic I could never tell unless they broke some universal law of couldn't have possibly happened. Predominantly auditory.
BWR...my visuals usually only changed part of a scene like the center line of the road would be zig-zag instead of straight, I would change people to more exotic cloths or give them pipes if I thought they were secretly leprechauns. They actually considered me for the epilepsy thing too because my olfactory hallucinations weren't going away but they were like well you've already got one diagnosis but you might have a second instead of hey this all might be temporal lobe epilepsy...I was just like I don't need a second for something this minor and eventually they just went away. Yeah but all they need to do is an EEG to find out...it's not a bad idea to get one if you aren't responding to meds because it could be electrical.

The difference between tactile and somatic hallucinations is that tactile feels like you're getting information from outside your body or about your environment, while somatic feels like you're getting information from inside or about your body. Believe it or not, they are actually considered different kinds of senses! Interoception refers to senses that tell you about your body (pain, organ movement, the need to pee, proprioception, balance) while exteroception tells you about your environment (the traditional 5 senses plus temperature, time). There are many more than 5 senses, so in theory one could have hallucinations in any of them. And I need to stop now because I am getting wayyy too nerdy. ![]()

Taste hallucinations would freak me the ~~~~ out! I am glad i don't have those. I have visual most of all, followed by auditory, then tactile. I have had olfactory, but it has been very rare.

I only had one and it was just bitter tasting like aspirin...I couldn't finish my water because of it....but I was so out of it then I had no idea it was a hallucination I just thought my water had somehow become contaminated between sips even though it was sitting in front of me the whole time. But yeah it does lead to thoughts of being poisoned etc. so it's not great...

I get nearly all types but not at the same time or same frequency. Auditory and visual are my most common by far. I have gotten the full on visuals as Blackwhitered said. I have been tested with an EEG many, many times for epilepsy. Not for that particular reason, but for others. I at times have conversion disorder with non-epileptic seizures. The visuals range from just seeing shadows, to full on out of the world experiences (literally). Once, I was eating and suddenly I was in outer space, looking down on numerous planets staring at the stars surrounding me. Another was that I was in the car (I wasn't driving and don't drive at all) and I ended up another place like in a hospital room (don't remember off hand if this was the place or not also I have had other experiences and my memory is not working due to extreme stress). I also see the typical demons, gov agents, seen a dragon once, etc. The auditories involve the simple sounds, hearing my name called, hearing things about me in other people's conversations, command hallucinations, etc. The olfactory hallucinations I just smell awful things. The gustatory hallucinations I taste awful things that makes me want to puke (I also have emetophobia... the fear of vomiting) and luckily for me the gustatory are the rarest. Tactile hallucinations vary year to year with a long time ago being the most frequent. As I'm getting older, the auditory and visuals grow while the tactile/ somatic (yes I know now they are different but to me they are equally occurring... well mine are) get less. I don't remember what else to say I know I am forgetting major details.

By far the most frequent I get is auditory, voices in and out of my head, both about equal. Out of my head voices sound more like a old cheap crystal type AM radio. I can not make out every word, some times not at all as if two or more stations are playing at the same time. The ones in my head are clearer but perhaps less frequent a bit. Usually I hear noise, melodies, and music or monks chanting in my head. Occasionally I do get very clear and loud voices outside of my head and those are the freakiest because it sounds like some one talking right next to me. I get tactical a lot at nite. Some times accompanied by auditory. Visual is the rarest and next rarest would be smells and tastes.
Thankfully none of my auditories are disturbing or too rude. I also get another form of auditory which is more common, at least that's what I've read. Noise turning in to voices. Any thing from wind, motors, any noise at all can turn in to voices. Not sure what that is called but they have a name for that too.

I read up on somatic hallucinations. They fall under tactile hallucinations.
I had a couple of complex tactile hallucinations. I was a clock, a body being embalmed, a gunshot victim, and an entity moving through the slipstream of time. The last was a real rush. |

wow. I thought I went through a lot when it came to tactile. it is no.1 for me. I have had burning, freezing, warping, stabbing, pressure. a huge chunk of them have been sexual. I can feel nearly full on body in bed with me, legs torso and other parts. I can feel breath blown on my neck and in my face. I can feel hands go over me. they are almost always delicate. it is the most amazing tactile experience I have ever had in my life. it seemed inhuman and impossible to ever feel so perfect, where every cell in your body vibrated and danced in unison. there are emotional "hallucinations" although it is more real than life, where I felt the epitome of love. a feeling so strong, everything in existence fled from me. I saw a vision of silk waves of purple undulate across my view.
visual hallucinations are bright dots of light of varying sizes and movement. I have seen shadows whips around the room and slink off when I turn to see them. auditory has morphed lately. I have a female voice and a male voice.....the male is recent and has a booming voice but it isn't always intelligible....muffled a bit. in fact it was getting irritated with me the other day and it banged on the walls and they actually moved as if someone had hit them. my speakers at the computer go nuts and make all kinds of static noise and if I listen closely I can hear them. the lights will flicker in my ceiling and I will hear an electric voice speak......as well as the fridge. I hear the male voice now hum to my piano music. someone pacing on the roof above my bedroom only. smelled rotten fish, and other unpleasant odors but taste has been very seldom once or twice.....tasting a food I know I did not eat.....nuttin special. |

That's based on the classic 5 sense model, though.

I almost constantly visually hallucinate but I used to only have auditory hallucinations about 4 months ago. Gradually things are getting worse though.
I usually see these giant germs floating in the sky and I see flies and black dots floating around. Also I see little flashes of light and these weird waves that look like they are pulsating. Kind of weird. Also shadows form out of nothing. It kind of looks like I stared at the sun too long. |

http://www.psychiatrictimes.com/fore...mics”/page/0/1 Have you had a full medical workup....there are some medical rather than psych conditions that have hallucinations....and they tend to be less complex so instead of seeing a person or animal or demon you will see a spot or flash of light. Anyway I put those links up with more info on some of the possibilities. Another characteristic of medical based hallucinations is that they don't always respond to meds so people will get worse instead of better etc. Anyway just wondering..
