So this is just based on a meeting abstract...not published peer reviewed data but it's so bizarre and potentially neat I had to share.

So there is this concept called insight which means people are aware of their illness....it's lacking in 60% of people with sz. But also in other conditions. Based on these other conditions it was known that putting cold water in one ear could increase insight transiently. So these guys wondered if it would work for sz and it does....it's only temporary a couple of hours max but all you have to do is take water at fridge temp and put it into your left ear. I think it's kind of like the pinch test to see if you're dreaming...wild huh?

Yeah I don't know but I'm going to try it if I ever wonder if what I'm experiencing is real or not again....I just wonder if it would affect delusions to though....

My mother's losing her memory, and she has absolutely no insight about it whatsoever. It's the most frustrating thing ever. Maybe I should sneak some cold water into her left ear.

Ok who found out that putting cold water in your left ear will make you aware you have a mental illness?! Did they find out at a bar?

Apparently it's something ENT docs use to test your balance it's called CVS but it was shown to help stroke patients who have damage on the right side of their brain...still I can't imagine have anyone came up with it at all.

Ok so the test causes you to blink unless you have cerebellar damage so I can see why it was used in people with strokes now....

I've had an ear get blocked before and I'd have to get a doctor to flush it out, but they use warm water. I have weird ears, they get blocked a lot.

Maybe next time I'll ask for cold water, ha ha.

Cold water in the ears is part of a series of tests done to check btainstem function when brain death is being considered.
